The Carhuamayo District is located in the Junín Province in the Junín Region in central Peru . The district has an area of 205 km². The 2017 census counted 6,638 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 9072, in 2007 it was 8386. The seat of the district administration is the small town Carhuamayo with 6347 inhabitants located at an altitude of 4146 m near the north - eastern shore of Lake Junín . Carhuamayo is about 30 km north of the provincial capital Junín .
Geographical location
The Carhuamayo District is located in the central north of the Junín Province. The district is located in the Andean highlands on the western flank of the Peruvian Central Cordillera on the northeast bank of Lake Junín. The lake and the lakeshore are within the Junín National Reserve .
The Carhuamayo district borders in the northwest on the district Ninacaca , in the northeast on the district Paucartambo (both in the province of Pasco , Region Pasco ) and the southeast by the districts Ulcumayo and Junín .
