The Caritas Association for the Diocese of Regensburg is the umbrella organization of organized Caritas ( Latin for charity , high esteem ) and the charity of the Roman Catholic Church in the Diocese of Regensburg . Currently there are more than 900 church-based social-charitable institutions and services under its roof.

The patroness of Caritas Regensburg is Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia . For this reason, Caritas Regensburg celebrates Elisabeth Day every year on November 19th.

history

In 1922 the association was founded, which also took over the tasks of the local Caritas association. The first chairman and managing director was Cathedral Chapter Robert Reichenberger . He was instrumental in founding the association. In the early years, the main focus was on caring for drinkers and alleviating the worst misery after the First World War . The adherence to Christian values against the reprisals of the National Socialists paid off after the Second World War in the confidence of the Allied Western powers: Caritas was entrusted with many tasks in the eastern Bavarian region , which concerned the supply of the population, the distribution of care packages and other relief goods . Due to its geographical location, the Regensburg Caritas Association paid special attention to the care of returnees and refugees in the post-war years . The following years and decades brought state and social development as well as economic expansion. In the years 1960 to the mid-eighties there was a lot of construction activity by Regensburg Caritas. District Caritas associations with their social centers are being expanded or newly established. After the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany , the German Caritas Association developed into the largest provider of social services due to the constitutional freedoms of the churches, the welfare state requirement and the principle of subsidiarity. Today, with more than half a million employees, it is one of the largest employers in Germany. Around 16,000 people are currently employed part-time or full-time in Caritas facilities in the Regensburg diocese.

structure

The association, which is under the supervision of the Bishop of Regensburg , is divided into ten Caritas associations and four Caritas secretariats. Affiliated as professional associations are the Catholic youth welfare , the social service of Catholic women , the Malteser relief service , the Kreuzbund and the IN VIA Association of Catholic Girls' Social Work . Under the umbrella of the Diocesan Caritas Association there are currently 925 facilities with around 48,000 places. There are currently over 16,000 full-time employees, almost 9,000 of them part-time, at Caritas Regensburg.

Every year around 260,000 people in the diocese are looked after by Caritas offices.
