Carl Witting (born September 8, 1823 in Jülich , † June 27, 1907 in Dresden ) was a German composer and music director .

Life

Witting taught himself to play the violin. At the age of 14 he was allowed to join the orchestra of the municipal theater in Aachen as second violinist . In 1847 he went to Paris and found a job as a tenor in the choir of the Great Opera , later as a singer in the Madeleine Church and as a musician in the orchestra of the Théâtre de la Gaîté . In Paris he was a student of Adolf Reichel and made the acquaintance of Hector Berlioz . In 1854 he won a prize advertised by the Duke of Caraman for the composition of a piano quartet .

In 1855 he left Paris again, first to Berlin , then to Hamburg , where his opera Das Jägerfest was premiered. From Lippstadt he corresponded with Theodor Fontane and asked in vain for an opera text. During this time, four of Fontane's poems were set to music. After a two-year stay in Glogau , he was appointed conductor of the symphony band in Dresden in September 1861 . There he successfully performed symphonies by Anton Rubinstein , Joachim Raff , and Franz Liszt , organized Mozart concerts and performed the recently published prelude to Tristan und Isolde by Richard Wagner . In 1865 he retired from this position and from then on worked as a private teacher, composing and writing musicological treatises.

Witting was married to the painter Minna Japha ( Louise Japha's sister ). The marriage produced five children, including the mathematician Alexander Witting , the singer Agnes Witting and the painter Walther Witting .
