Carl von Schlicht , also Karl Freiherr von Schlicht (born June 1, 1833 in Gutenpaaren in Havelland , † 1912 in Potsdam ), was a German landscape and marine painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Thunderstorm mood over the Havel , around 1880

Von Schlicht, son of the “Economics Commissarius” von Schlicht and his wife Louise Alexandrine Caroline, née von Eckenbrecher, initially embarked on a career as an officer in the Prussian Army . As a lieutenant in the 1st Guards Regiment on foot , he left military service. In 1856 he went to Düsseldorf and trained as a landscape painter under Stanislaus von Kalckreuth , Andreas Achenbach and Hans Fredrik Gude . He followed the painter Kalckreuth, who went to Weimar in 1858 and co-founded the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Art , there in 1859, as did Ferdinand von Harrach , Johannes Niessen and August von Wille . His good contacts with the Prussian aristocracy right up to the royal family contributed to achieving medal and sales successes for the Weimar art school in Berlin, especially at the academy exhibitions there. In 1873 von Schlicht was represented at the Vienna World Exhibition . As a painter he mainly traveled to the landscapes of the Alps (Bavaria, Switzerland, Tyrol, Upper Italy) and the low mountain range (Rhön), probably also Norway and German South West Africa (1902). After living in Weimar for several years, he moved to Kreuznach in the 1870s , where he worked as a drawing teacher at the grammar school , and later to Düsseldorf again, where he was a member of the artists' association Malkasten . Most recently he lived in Potsdam.
