Carrabelle is a city in Franklin County in the US state of Florida with 2,778 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Carabelle is about 35 km northeast of Apalachicola and about 80 km south of Tallahassee . The city is named after the Carrabelle River , which flows into the Gulf of Mexico here .
history
With the opening of the first sawmill in 1875, the place became an important location for wood processing and turpentine extraction. In 1893 the city of Carrabelle was officially founded. In the same year a railway line was opened between Tallahassee and Carrabelle by the Carrabelle, Tallahassee and Georgia Railroad , which brought tourism to the region in addition to an industrial boom. In 1948, however, the line was shut down again. Between the world wars, fishing became a major industry. From 1941 to 1946, Camp Gordon Johnston was located in Carrabelle , where members of the army were trained for use in World War II.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 2778 inhabitants were distributed over 988 households. The population density was 286.4 inh / km². 69.5% of the population identified themselves as whites , 27.6% as African-Americans , 0.3% as Indians and 0.4% as Asian Americans . 0.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.5% to several ethnic groups. 8.7% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 29.3% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 34.8% of all households. 64.1% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.34 people and the average family size was 2.78 people.
11.9% of the population were younger than 20 years, 46.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.3% were 40 to 59 years old, and 14.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 36 years. 75.5% of the population were male and 24.5% were female.
The median annual income was $ 23,512, with 35.2% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 97.54% of the population, 1.61% spoke Spanish and 0.85% spoke German .
Attractions
On December 1, 1978, the Crooked River Lighthouse was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Carrebelle is crossed by US Highways 98 and 319 ( SR 30 ) on a shared cup. The nearest airport is Tallahassee International Airport (around 80 km north).

The crime rate in 2010 was 209 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were seven personal injuries, 14 break-ins, eight thefts and one car theft.
