Carso (wine region)

Carso or Carso-Kras is an Italian wine-growing region in the former provinces of Trieste and Gorizia , Friuli-Venezia Giulia . The area takes its name from the Karst landscape of the same name, Carso . The climate is characterized by very mild summers and the cold gusts of the east wind Bora .

The municipalities of Duino-Aurisina , Monrupino , Muggia , San Dorligo della Valle and Sgonico (Province of Trieste) as well as Doberdò del Lago , Monfalcone , Ronchi dei Legionari , Fogliano Redipuglia , Sagrado and Savogna d'Isonzo (Province of Gorizia) have approved vineyards in the wine-growing region, which has enjoyed the status of a Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC for short) since July 17, 1985 (updated on March 7, 2014) . The area extends along the Adriatic coast on the Gulf of Trieste. It is bounded in the north by the DOC Collio Goriziano and in the south by the Croatian region of Istria .
