Cassie is the debut studio album of the same name American Contemporary R & B - singer . It was released on August 8, 2006 and peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200 . Nine years after the first release, the album was released on LP .

background

Cassie was discovered by music producer Ryan Leslie and together they wrote Kiss Me , a song originally intended as a birthday present for Cassie's mother. Leslie played the song for Tommy Mottola, Managing Director of Casablanca Records . Mottola then offered Cassie a management contract. Leslie and Cassie wrote Cassie's first single, Me & U , which became internationally known with the help of Cassie's MySpace account and became a club hit. P. Diddy heard the song in a club too, and Leslie convinced him to release Cassie's debut album on Diddy's record label Bad Boy Records . Leslie then produced the full album, and the recordings took place at The Apartment Studios and the Right Track Recording Studios in New York City . The mixing took place in these studios as well as in the integrated studios .

Cassie was received largely positively by the critics. For Valerie Timm from Laut.de “Cassie is creating a new trend with her album”. Due to the similarity of the songs, “there is a risk of boredom in the long run,” the critic continues. For them, Me & U “clearly stands out” and is what they consider to be the best song on the album. Therefore, there is a risk of “reducing them to this [song] alone”. For Hanna van der Velden from Cdstarts.de the album is “not the worst R'n'B album currently on the market”. However, she criticizes the lack of "certain something, so that Cassie's debut is easily overlooked in every CD cabinet".

For the music magazine Blender , Cassie is "the most consistently compelling R&B debut since Kelis ". For Chris Richards of the Washington Post, "one of the best pop albums released this year sounds like out of space, or the future, or maybe out of heaven." “Cassis voice sounds partly like an angel, partly like a robot,” the critic continued. The New York Times also rated the album positively, it "avoids the mistakes one expects on such an album", the "shallow R&B songs are pleasantly mastered on space beats".

Commercial win

Cassie debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 on August 26, 2006 , which is also the top spot for the album on these charts. It stayed in the top 20 for two weeks and in the entire album charts for thirteen weeks. By August 2008, the album had sold 321,000 copies in the United States. In the British album charts , Cassie reached number 33 as the best place, the album spent eight weeks in these charts. For over 60,000 copies sold, Cassie received a silver record from the British Phonographic Industry . In the German-speaking countries, the album did not reach high chart positions, in the German album charts Cassie only spent a week at number 82. The album could not even place in the Ö3 Austria Top 40 , in the Swiss charts it was ranked 57th as the highest position. The album was sold around 650,000 times worldwide.

In terms of charts, Cassie's debut single Me & U was more successful . This reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 , number 6 in the British singles charts and the top 20 in Germany and Switzerland. Furthermore, it was Me & U by the Recording Industry Association of America with a platinum record award. Together with a gold record in the UK and Canada, the song was sold over 1.4 million times. Cassie's second single Long Way To Go , however, could not build on the success of the debut single.
