Catherine Martin ( Irish Caitríona Ní Mháirtín ; born December 7, 1972 in Carrickmacross , County Monaghan ) is an Irish politician of the Green Party (GP) who has been Minister for Media, Tourism, Art, Culture, Sport and in the Martin government since June 2020 who is Gaeltacht .

Life

Catherine Martin holds a teacher training degree from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth . She worked as a classical singer and from 2001 to 2016 as a teacher of English and music at St. Tiernan's Community School in Dundrum . She began her political career for the Green Party (GP) when she was elected to the Monaghan County Council in 2009, where she represented the Monaghan constituency until 2010 . On June 11, 2011, she became vice-chairman of the Green Party. On May 24, 2014 she became a member of the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and was a member until May 24, 2019. She also served as a member of the County Council's Education and Training Committee and served on the boards of trustees of the College of Further Education in Stillorgan and St. Tiernan's Community School in Dundrum.

In the elections on February 26, 2016 she was elected for the first time for the GP in the constituency of Dublin Rathdown as a member ( Teachta Dála ) of Dáil Éireann , the lower house of Parliament ( Oireachtas ) . She was her parliamentary group's spokesperson for education policy and a member of the Future of Mental Healthcare Committee and the Education and Skills Committee . After founding the Oireachtas Women's Parliamentary Caucus in November 2017, she became its founding chair. In the elections on February 8, 2020 , she was re-elected as a member of the Dáil Éireann in the Dublin Rathdown constituency.

On June 27, 2020 was Stephen Donnelly as Minister of Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht (Minister for Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht) in the Government Martin appointed. In July 2020, she applied for the position of chairman of the Green Party, defeated by 946 votes (48.6 percent) against Eamon Ryan , who has been in office since 2011 and received 994 votes (51 percent).

Catherine Martin has been married to Francis Noel Duffy since 2002 , who has also been Teachta Dála for the Green Party since 2020 . From this marriage there were three children. Her older brother Vincent P. Martin became a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) , the Upper House of Parliament (Oireachtas) for the Green Party 2020 .
