When it was founded in 1946, the settlement was named Chaldea . In the same year, the administrative headquarters of Appanoose County was established here. After the place was called Sentorville in the meantime , it got the name Centerville in 1855 through a spelling mistake , which has since been in the official files. In 1857 the place was incorporated as an independent municipality after the adoption of a municipal constitution.
