The Ch-38 is a modular air-to-surface missile made in Russia.

In 1996 it was announced that the Raduga Design Bureau (now Tactical Missiles Corporation) was developing a family of guided missiles called the Ch-38. This is intended to replace the Ch-25 and Ch-29 guided missiles from the 1970s . The Ch-38 was presented to the public for the first time at the MAKS 2007 trade fair . Some Ch-38ML were delivered to the Russian Air Force for testing purposes in 2012. These tests were completed in 2017. It is unclear whether the Russian air force procured the Ch-38 afterwards.

The Ch-38 can be used against a wide range of tactical targets, such as air defense , ships , transport facilities, traffic systems and bunkered systems. For this purpose, the Ch-38 has a modular structure and consists of the following parts: steering unit, seeker head, warhead and rocket motor. Depending on the tactical situation and the nature of the target, the Ch-38 can be equipped with different search and warheads. Apart from the rocket motor and the steering unit, there are different versions of all modules that can be combined with one another. Different versions of the Ch-38 are created:

  • Ch-38ML: With Ts-074MD steering unit and semi-active 65SNL laser target seeker.
  • Ch-38MA: With Ts-074MD steering unit and an active ARGS-38 radar search head in the K u band.
  • Ch-38MT: With Ts-074MD steering unit and an imaging IR camera with digital image processing.
  • Ch-38MK: With Ts-074MD steering unit.

The Ch-38 can vary depending on the target texture with a 250 kg BS-65F - A fragmentation warhead , the BS-65P - penetration warhead or bomblets (only Ch-38MK) are equipped.

The Ch-38 can be used by AKU and APU start rails . The guided weapons can be equipped with folding wings for transport in the bomb bay . When taking off from a low altitude, the range is around 12-20 km. A range of up to 40 km is achieved from a great height. The Ch-38 can be launched at altitudes of 200–12,000 m at speeds of 15–450 m / s. The flight to the target area takes place autonomously with the help of the Ts-074MD steering unit. In addition to an INS, this uses a multi-channel receiver for the satellite navigation systems GLONASS and GPS . Depending on availability, the steering system automatically selects one of the two satellite signals. The on-board seeker head is then used for the target approach and guides the missile into the target. Except for the Ch-38ML version, the target approach is also autonomous. In the Ch-38ml is a target illumination by the laser necessary. The other versions belong to the so-called fire-and-forget weapons. The mean accuracy ( CEP ) should be 2–5 m. It should also be possible to fight small and moving targets the size of a car .
