Ch-59MK2

The Ch-59M Owod-M ( NATO code name AS-18 Kazoo ) is an air-to-surface missile developed in the Soviet Union .

development

Development began in the Soviet Union in the late 1980s in the Raduga design office . The Ch-59M is based on the Ch-59 and was introduced on a trial basis in 1995 with the Russian Air Force. The Ch-59M guided missiles belong to the weapon systems of Soviet design, which were only ready for series production in the 1990s. Due to their lack of money, the Russian armed forces were only able to obtain the guided weapons to a very limited extent, which is why they are now mainly produced for export.

technology

The Ch-59M is basically a Ch-59, which has a turbojet engine instead of the solid rocket engine . It is used to combat tactical and strategic ground targets such as air defense , ships , transport facilities, traffic systems and bunkered systems.

The Ch-59M / ME / MR versions are standoff weapons. Before starting, the coordinates of the target must be entered in the missile's navigation system . After being dropped from the aircraft, there is initially a short period of non-propulsion. The solid fuel booster on the rear of the guided missile only ignites at a safe distance from the aircraft . This accelerates the missile to a speed of around 300 m / s. After the booster has burned out, it is thrown off and the R-95-300 turbo jet ignites. When the solid fuel booster is dropped, the antenna for the 2-way data link is exposed at the rear . The cruise flight takes place at a speed of 240 to 290 m / s. This can take place at an altitude of 50 m, 100 m, 200 m, 600 m or 1,000 m. A radar altimeter ensures the necessary safety distance between the missile and the terrain. The flight to the target area takes place autonomously with the help of the inertial navigation platform . The data link is activated for the target approach and the TV image of the seeker head in the tip of the guided weapon is transmitted to the aircraft. Now the target can be precisely sighted and the TV image is now transmitted until the guided weapon hits the aircraft (man-in-the-loop). This also makes it possible to fight slowly moving targets. A mean hit accuracy ( CEP ) of 2 to 3 meters is achieved. The carrier aircraft must be equipped with an APK-8 or APK-9 data link pod to transmit the image data from the guided missile seeker head.

The Ch-59MA / MK are anti-ship missiles . After the targets have been identified by the aircraft using radar, the guided missiles find their targets by themselves after being dropped ( fire-and-forget ). These versions can be started at an altitude of 200 to 11,000 m at speeds of 600 to 1,000 km / h. The flight to the target area takes place autonomously with the help of the inertial navigation platform. An active radar seeker is used to approach the target . The target approach takes place at a height of 7 m. The impact in the ship's hull takes place at wave height.

The Ch-59MK2 / MEh are tactical cruise missiles . The flight takes place autonomously in contour flight with the help of the inertial navigation platform , GLONASS and a DSMAC seeker (Digital Scene Matching Area Correlation) for the target approach. A mean hit accuracy ( CEP ) of 5 to 10 meters is achieved.
