biography

Christian Habekost grew up in Mannheim. After high school and community service as a paramedic, he studied English, German and political science in Mannheim, London and Kingston , Jamaica . In 1991 he received his doctorate on Caribbean performance and music poetry and passed with summa cum laude . He wrote the books Dub Poetry, 19 Poets (including work analyzes by Linton Kwesi Johnson and Mutabaruka ) and Verbal Riddim .

Already active as a stage performer during his studies, Christian Habekost immersed himself artistically in Caribbean music, especially Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobagos, during his longer study stays in the Caribbean. As the first white European he finally appeared in January 1994 under the name “Chako” with his then wife Bettina (“Chako & Tina”) at the carnival in Trinidad and Tobago in front of more than 10,000 people in the National Stadium of Port of Spain. His Calypso Whitey became a surprise hit there and is also known in Germany. The heute-journal reported on the "Calypso-King from Mannheim".

This was followed by further appearances at Soca and Calypso shows in New York ("International Calypso / Soca Monarch Competition", 1994) and Toronto ("Soca Monarch of the World Competition", 1994, 3rd place) as well as further appearances at the Trinidad Carnival in 1995 and 1996. In 1994, Habekost received a recording contract with WEA Records , where he released his maxi single “Ragga Riddim is the Boss”, one of the first German-language reggae songs. In 1996, the ARD broadcast a half-hour documentary feature about Christian and Bettina Habekost in the Teleglobus series.

In the following years, Christian Habekost appeared as a comedian and cabaret artist, also under the pseudonym Chako. TV appearances in programs like Ottis Schlachthof , Wat is? ( WDR ), Whoever Laughs Last ...! ( SAT 1 ), Hüsch & Co. ( SR ) made him known nationwide. Together with Dieter Hallervorden , he worked from 1998 to 2003 as an author and actor in the ARD show “ Hallervordens Spott-Light ”. From 2004 onwards, Chako Habekost appeared on stage several times with the singer Xavier Naidoo , for example during the “Are you interested in life” tour in 2006 and the “O live lait” TV show. In the Rhein-Neckar Fernsehen Chako Habekost moderated From 2007 to 2008 the "Comedy Club Pfingstweide".

In 2005, Habekost founded his own eight-piece band and, with the Chako Music Show, implemented a long-planned project to combine comedy and German lyrics with Caribbean-Latin American rhythms. The first album PaLatinos appeared in the same year.

Since 1996 Chako Habekost has performed solo programs for the stage. In them, the comedian and cabaret artist deals intensively with his native (spa) Palatinate dialect . He also transfers the rhythmic forms of poetry from the Caribbean to his own dialect (“Dub Poetry in Palatinate”).

Chako Habekost's numerous rap and performance texts, in particular “Mei Sprooch” (appeared on the CD “Habekostbarkeiten” as well as in the books “Chako babbelt like printed” and “vun unne”), “De MundArtischt”, “MundArtacke” (published on CD of the same name), “De Bappe-Räpp” (appeared on the CD “rischdisch.falsch.gebabbelt”), “Ode to the Dubbeglas” (appeared on the CD “Der Palatinator”) and “Gebet” make him one today Representative of modern Palatine poetry.
