Hiwwe wie Driwwe - Pfälzisch in Amerika is a German documentary by filmmakers Benjamin Wagener and Christian Schega from 2019.

The preview took place on August 8, 2018 in the plenary hall of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament in Mainz . The premiere took place on April 13, 2019 in the presence of the protagonist Douglas Madenford and the two directors Benjamin Wagener and Christian Schega in the Universum Kinocenter in Landau in the Palatinate .

action

Hiwwe like Driwwe - Palatinate in America accompanies Douglas Madenford on a search for traces of the Palatinate language and culture through his American homeland and the Palatinate. On this trip he meets a cook in America who prepares Palatinate Saumagen , or a teacher who teaches Pennsylvania Dutch . In Germany he meets the linguist Michael Werner , who has been intensively involved with the language for many years, and meets Christian "Chako" Habekost , who is known as a Palatinate comedian even beyond the borders of the Palatinate language area. It is always about the question of what still connects the descendants of the Palatinate emigrants of the 18th century and the descendants of those who remained in the Palatinate after 300 years of separation.

background

About 300 years ago, many people from the Palatinate fled to the USA both from political persecution and for economic reasons and settled mainly in and around the state of Pennsylvania (see Pennsilfaani Deitsche ). They also brought their language and culture with them to the New World . To date, around 400,000 Americans speak a variant of the Palatinate dialect: Pennsylvania Dutch. The film was therefore shot in four languages in the original language: Pennsylvania Dutch and Palatinate , Standard German and English . The film title takes up the name of the only Pennsylvania German newspaper Hiwwe like Driwwe and was created in cooperation with the editorial team.

The film project was funded by, among others, the Kulturstiftung Rheinland-Pfalz , the Bezirksverband Pfalz , the Sparkassen Stiftung Germersheim-Kandel and numerous crowdfunders.

Older projects

In terms of film, the subject of “Pennsylvania Dutch” was first treated in Germany by Georg Brintrup. His 60-minute German film essay from 1982 is called “Penn'a Du” - an abbreviation for “Pennsylvania Dutch” that is common in the USA. The first broadcast of "Penn'a Du" took place on October 1, 1982 on WDR . The American premiere of the German and English versions was on November 6, 1982 in the Wismer Auditorium at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. Further television broadcasts followed on German television stations until 1983. In the USA, the English version was broadcast by independent, local television stations, such as the WFMZ, in southeastern Pennsylvania. In 2015 Michael Werner, editor of the Pennsylvania German newspaper “Hiwwe wie Driwwe”, published the 30-minute video clip “Pennsylvanian-Deitsch in 2015” on YouTube, which more than 100,000 people have now viewed online. Here, too, the members of the editorial team - in addition to Werner, Douglas Madenford and Patrick Donmoyer - work in front of the camera. Musician and Pennsylvania German teacher Keith Brintzenhoff is the only person to be seen in the documentary from 1982 as well as in the project “Hiwwe wie Driwwe - Palatinate in America”, which was completed in 2018.
