Chante is a pop-jazz album by the Italian jazz musician Aldo Romano , released in 2006.

background

Aldo Romano, who is known as a drummer, has played with jazz greats such as Bud Powell , Don Cherry , Keith Jarrett and Charlie Mariano during his career . In 2004 he surprised the Copenhagen audience when he was awarded the Jazzpar Prize and sang Estate . Due to the warm reception of the song, Romano decided to record an album exclusively as a singer, Chante . Before that, he had occasionally emerged as a singer, for example in the jazz rock band Total Issue . In addition, he had already interpreted French chansons on the album État de fait in 2003 .

On Chante , Romano limits himself to the role of singer and sings thirteen tracks, a mixture of French and English pop songs and chansons as well as his own compositions and standards. He sings the piece Io qui tu li in a duet with the model and singer Carla Bruni . Romano is accompanied by longtime companions and proven jazz musicians such as Flavio Boltro . In addition, strings are sometimes used.

reception

The album was received differently by audiences and critics. Paolo Peviani wrote on All About Jazz : "A small sin of vanity, which he is willingly forgiven given his artistic greatness (as a drummer)." All About Jazz awarded 1.5 stars for the album. Paula Edelstein awarded four stars at Allmusic and wrote: “With the excellent accompaniment of Nelson Veras on acoustic guitar, Rémi Vignolo on double bass, Andre" Dee "Ceccarelli on drums, Francis Bearzatti on tenor saxophone and clarinet, Flavio Boltro on trumpet and Baptiste Trotignon on the piano is the pleasure that Romano's poetic expressions produce, priceless.
