Charles Emile Jacque (* 23. May 1813 in Paris , France ; † 7. May 1894 ) was a French painter and graphic artist of the Barbizon school .

Life

In the Jacque family of painters, he is the father of Emile, Frederic and brother of Leon. The artist was a French animal (sheep) and landscape painter and versatile graphic artist from the Barbizon School. He worked in the graphic field as an eraser, copperplate engraver, lithographer, wood cutter, map engraver. His main achievement is in his etchings . From around 1850 he worked with zincography and used it for his illustrations.

At the age of 17 he learned to engrave maps, from 1830 he served as a soldier for several years. He besieged the city of Antwerp with where his first landscape in drypoint emerged, as well as humorous and military scenes. In 1835, after his discharge from military service, he traveled to Burgundy, where his family lived, and only then did he self-taught to translate impressions of nature into painting. Well, through many observations with flocks of sheep on farms and in butcher shops, he began painting animals (pets).

After long study visits in 1848 with his friends Jean-François Millet (1814–1875) and Théodore Rousseau (1812–1867) in Barbizon . In 1839 he established his first relationships with Best, the publisher of the Pittoresque magazine. In 1836 he went to London , and in 1838, after an absence of 20 months, returned to Paris . In the unsophisticated representation of nature, which was new at the time, he adored the Dutch etchers of the 17th century. But as early as 1870, art connoisseurs, like the German animal painter Carl Jutz (1838–1916), discovered his outstanding depictions of animals.
