In the late 1970s he was a board member of the New York construction company JD Posillico . In 1981, President Ronald Reagan appointed him vice director of public transportation in the US government . In 1988 he succeeded Sheldon J. Krys as US ambassador to the Caribbean island state of Trinidad and Tobago . During his tenure there was an unsuccessful attempted coup by Muslim rebels.

Gargano remained active as a renowned project developer in urban development in New York and only spent around half of his tenure in Port of Spain , so that he was reprimanded in this regard by the US State Department . His time as ambassador ended in June 1991; he was replaced by Sally G. Cowal .

Until the end of 2007, Gargano was Vice President of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey . He was also an economic advisor to New York Governor George Pataki ( Republican Party ). On November 5, 2007, President George W. Bush nominated him to succeed Susan McCaw as ambassador to Austria, although the approval of the US Senate remained pending. Gargano is one of those US ambassadors who have distinguished themselves as financially strong supporters in Bush's election campaign. Due to the voting structure in the US Parliament, Gargano was never elected for office in Vienna . It was not until June 27 that the Senate approved the appointment of David F. Gargano was a guest actor in the films " World Trade Center " (2006) opposite Nicolas Cage and " On behalf of the devil " (1997) with Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino .
