Chongming (municipality)

Chongming ( Chinese 崇明區 / 崇明区 , Pinyin Chóngmíng Qū ) is a municipality within the government- immediate city of Shanghai . It is made up of the island of the same name, Chongming, and the islands of Changxing and Hengsha, offshore to the south, and is considered the last relatively untouched area of the city of Shanghai.

The city district has an area of 1,411 km² and 701,000 residents with main residence (end of 2005). The island of Chongming has 632,000 inhabitants. In addition, there are around 83,000 residents who only stay here temporarily. The population density is 555.63 inhabitants / km².

Chongming has existed as a district since July 2016, before that, Chongming was the last district in Shanghai city.

Administrative structure

At the community level, Chongming consists of 16 large communities and two communities . These are:

Chengqiao Municipality (城桥镇), capital of the island and seat of the county government;
Greater community Buzhen (堡镇镇);
Large community Changxing (长兴 Groß), 88 km², 36,000 inhabitants, the large community covers the entire island of Changxing, the western one of the Chongming islands in the south;
Greater community Chenjia (陈家镇);
Greater community Dongping (东平镇);
Greater community Gangxi (港西镇);
Greater community Gangyan (港沿镇);
Greater community Jianshe (建设镇);
Greater community Lühua (绿华镇);
Greater community Miao (庙镇);
Greater community Sanxing (三星镇);
Greater community Shuxin (竖新镇);
Greater community Xianghua (向化镇);
Greater community Xinhai (新海镇);
Greater community Xinhe (新河镇);
Greater community Zhongxing (中兴镇);
Municipality of Hengsha (横沙,), 56 km², 33,000 inhabitants, the municipality occupies the entire island of Hengsha, the eastern one of the Chongming islands in the south;
Xincun Township (新村乡).
