The list of city districts of Shanghai provides an overview of the development of the population of the city ​​districts of the Chinese city ​​of Shanghai . The area, the population density and the location of the district in the city of Shanghai are also listed.

The government-direct city of Shanghai in the People's Republic of China is divided into 15 districts and a "new" district. The administrative area of ​​Shanghai is not a contiguous urban area, but with its dominant rural settlement structure outside the core city (high density of buildings and closed locality) would be more comparable to a small province. The urban area is divided into the inner city ( Puxi ) west of the Huangpu River and the Pudong district east of it . Then there are the inner suburbs of Baoshan , Minhang and Jiading .

The city center (Puxi) is divided into seven districts:

The former Luwan and Zhabei Districts were dissolved in 2011 and 2015, respectively, and incorporated into the Huangpu and Jing'an Districts.

Periphery

There are four other city districts in the vicinity of the city center. Between 1988 and 1992, these were converted from districts into city districts:

  • Baoshan (宝山 区Bǎoshān Qū ) - Baoshan County until 1988,
  • Minhang (闵行区Mǐnháng Qū ) - Minhang district until 1992,
  • Jiading (嘉定 区Jiādìng Qū ) - Jiading district until 1992,
  • New Pudong District (浦东 新区Pǔdōng Xīn Qū ) - until 1992: Chuansha District; 2009: expanded to include the area of ​​the dissolved city district of Nanhui (南汇 区Nánhuì Qū ).

Rural environment

Five city districts, which were converted from districts to city districts between 1992 and 2016, are located further away from the city center in the rural areas outside the core city:

  • Jinshan District (金山区Jīnshān Qū ) - Jinshan County until 1992,
  • Songjiang District (松江 区Sōngjiāng Qū ) - Songjiang District until 1997,
  • Qingpu District (青浦 区Qīngpǔ Qū ) - Qingpu District until 1999,
  • Fengxian District (奉贤 区Fèngxián Qū ) - Fengxian District until 2001,
  • Chongming District (崇明 区Chóngmíng Qū ) - Chongming District until 2016.

The information relates to all residents registered in Shanghai.
