Palais Schaumburg is a rock group of the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) founded in Hamburg in 1980 . It was named after the Chancellor's Palais Schaumburg residence in Bonn. Her style was characterized by a funk- oriented rhythm section (bass, drums) and atonal singing reminiscent of children's songs .

History and style

Influenced by the American avant-garde band The Residents , Palais Schaumburg tried a new kind of avant-garde "dance music". The group used the text of the children's opera We build a city by Paul Hindemith for their most famous song and leaned heavily on Dadaism . Typical lines were:

We're in bed
The mast hit my head
The mast hit me in the head
We sweep the forest
Tomorrow the forest will be swept
Gray wolf hanged
Gray wolf

In addition to Holger Hiller and Thomas Fehlmann u. a. also FM unit ( Abwärts , Einstürzende Neubauten ), which left the group in mid-1981. After two self-published singles, the group got a record deal with a large label - one example of many where the music industry was broadly positioned and also contracted NDW groups that did not serve the mainstream . In the 1981 film Deutsche Welle , produced by Michael Bentele , the group is represented with three pieces: Telephone , We're building a city and Yeah, my gentlemen ( Hans-Albers - Cover ).

The group never got beyond the insider tip status. Within the scene, Palais Schaumburg took on the role of the undercooled intellectual dance music from Hamburg and thus formed a contrast to more punk- oriented groups such as Fehlfarben from Düsseldorf or Ideal from Berlin, which played ironically with motifs from the hit song. After the debut LP, Hiller left the band to start a solo career. With his successor Walther Thielsch the album Lupa was created , which offered a mixture of funk, Latin American sounds and avant-garde.

After a long break, the group, which had shrunk to a trio, tried a fresh start with the English-speaking Parlez-Vous Schaumburg , produced by NDW singer Inga Humpe ( Neonbabies , DÖF ). There was no success, they parted again.

Since 2011, Palais Schaumburg has been gathering again for isolated concerts with the line-up of Hiller, Blunck, Fehlmann and Hertwig, for example in 2012 in Cologne as part of c / o pop in the chamber music hall of Deutschlandfunk and in Frankfurt am Main at the “Lüften” festival 2018 in Munich at the Alien Disko Festival in the Kammerspiele and in 2019 in Hamburg at Kampnagel .
