Timo Blunck (2015)

Timo Blunck (born March 25, 1962 in Buchholz in the Nordheide ) is a German composer , songwriter , music producer , bassist , singer and author .

Life

Blunck grew up in Hamburg . At the age of 9 he began taking flute lessons with Manfred Trojahn .

In 1978 he and his school friend Detlef Diederichsen first founded the Skafighter, which was renamed "Ede und die Zimmermänner" (later just Die Zimmermänner ) for the recording of the first single on Alfred Hilsberg's label Zick Zack in 1980 .

In 1981 he became the bassist of Palais Schaumburg , whose first two albums he also influenced as a background singer and co-writer. His unusual style on the bass (he only played guitar before Palais Schaumburg) does not follow any scales, only geometric patterns on the fingerboard and is an integral part of the primarily atonal band sound. Palais Schaumburg was produced by David Cunningham from The Flying Lizards and Andy " Coati Mundi " Hernandez from Kid Creole & the Coconuts .

Daniel Miller engaged the band in 1981 for his label Mute Records ; they played as the opening act for Depeche Mode . They were one of the first acts in Manchester's The Hacienda and performed in the Danceteria in New York. On their European tour in 1982 they were accompanied by Kurtis Blow .

The photographer and director Anton Corbijn , who had already taken the photos for the album Lupa (1982), shot his first music video for the single Hockey in 1983 .

From 1985 to 1990 Blunck was the singer and songwriter of the Hamburg pop band Grace Kairos, which released two albums, produced a. a. by Ray Shulman , formerly Gentle Giant . The singles Carolina and I don't know what's going on hit the charts in Holland and Sweden. In 1990 they toured as support for Wet Wet Wet. In 1990 he moved to London , where he produced in his own studio (Momentum Sounds), among others, Freaky Realistic and Christie Hennessy (for which he also writes songs). Chart successes were recorded in England and Ireland.

In 1992 his solo album Timo was released with the single Louisiana Lonely . German film director Gregor Schnitzler shot the video for the single in Louisiana .

In 1995 the company moved to the USA, first to Baton Rouge , Louisiana, then to Los Angeles .

In 1998, together with Stefan Will , Blunck founded the production company Bluwi, which composes and produces music for cinema, TV and advertising films. Customers included directors like Justus von Dohnányi and Christian Petzold , and brands like Audi, Mercedes, Nivea and Deutsche Post.

From 2010 onwards, Bluwi also took care of spatial communication, including at the Expo 2010 (Saudi Arabian pavilion) in Shanghai or the Expo 2012 in Yeosu (Swiss pavilion, Caltex pavilion).

Timo Blunck has been a member of the Art Directors Club Germany since 2002 .

Since 2011 he has played again with Palais Schaumburg in the original line-up. The group's continued success in Japan led to concerts in Tokyo and Osaka in 2012 .

The carpenters continue to release albums, most recently A Dog Called Work (2014) on Wallpaper Records, produced by Blunck.

In 2014 he mixed the album Spaces Everywhere for the London based band The Monochrome Set .

In 2015 came Über ... Menschen from the Düsseldorf group Fehlfarben . Since July 2015, Blunck has been running the BLUT company together with BLUWI producer Stephanie Zanatta, in which the two continue their work after BLUWI was dissolved.

He has been commuting between Hamburg and New Orleans since 2001 . Timo Blunck has three sons from his marriage to the American stylist Sondra Woodard Blunck.

On March 5, 2018, Blunck published his debut novel Didn't we even have sex in the 80s? by Heyne Hardcore , the album of the same name was released by Wallpaper Records . The partially fictionalized autobiography reports on the author's life on almost 500 pages. The 12 chapters of the book correspond to the 12 songs on the album.
