Christian David Jani (born December 13, 1743 in Glaucha ; † October 5, 1790 in Eisleben ) was a German philologist and educator.

Life

Christian David Jani was born as the son of David Eberhard Jani (1710–1768), pastor in Glaucha. He had two brothers:

  • Johann August Jani (1752–1795), from 1775 to 1790 teacher at the Lutheran Gymnasium in Halle (Saale), deacon of the Ulrichskirche and penitentiary preacher in Halle (Saale) from 1790 to 1795;
  • Gottlob Heinrich Jani (1756–1820), teacher and vice-principal in Wettin from 1791 to 1799 , pastor in Wolferode from 1799 to 1808 and pastor in Helbra from 1808 to 1820 .

His father was allowed him in childhood lessons in French, English and Italian language and after Christian David Jani the Latin School and the Pädagogium in Halle (Saale) had visited, he began in 1760 first a theology degree at the University of Halle , the however, he dropped out due to his preference for linguistic studies. Influenced by his teacher Gottlieb Anastasius Freylinghausen , he was now preparing for a job as a teacher.

In 1761 he began teaching at the Latin School in Halle, whereupon he was appointed full teacher at the pedagogy (today: Latina August Hermann Francke ) in 1764 and vice-principal in 1767. In 1772 he became a doctor of philosophy and held philological and critical lectures for academic audiences at the University of Halle.

When the rector Johann Gottfried Taust (1698–1780) was unable to continue running the Lutheran Gymnasium for health reasons, Christian David Jani was given its extensive duties; at the same time he was commissioned by the scholar to draft an improvement plan for the school, which was carried out in 1779 according to his suggestions. He also appeared as a lecturer at the University of Halle, until in 1780 he followed the call of Count Heinrich Paul Franz II von Mansfeld (1717–1780) as rector at the high school in Eisleben . He worked there until his death, ten years later. One of his students was among other things Georg Philipp Friedrich von Hardenberg ( Novalis ), who later became a writer and philosopher.

Christian David Jani was married three times; his first two wives were sisters with the maiden name Carpzov. All three marriages had daughters and a son.
