Christian Mali
Christian Friedrich Mali (born October 6, 1832 in Darthuizen , Netherlands, † October 1, 1906 in Munich ) was a German animal , landscape and genre painter from the Munich School . He was the younger brother of the painter Johannes Cornelis Jacobus Mali .
Life
Christian Mali was the youngest of ten siblings, almost all of whom had artistic talent. His sister was married to the Nijmegen painter Pieter Francis Peters , who also influenced Christian Mali and his brother Jan. After the rapid death of his father in 1833, Mali came to Württemberg with his mother and worked as a xylograph in Stuttgart until 1858 . He moved to his brother Jan in Munich , where he met his friend Anton Braith in 1860 . He trained in landscape painting, with which he combined architectural painting as a result of a trip to Italy. At the time, emerged evening in Verona ( Neue Pinakothek , Munich), part of Venice and The Monastery Maulbronn .
In 1865 Mali went to Düsseldorf and from there to Paris , where studying the works of Troyon and his influence prompted him to devote himself to painting animals , particularly sheep .
Honors
Luitpold von Bayern , with whom he was friends, honored him with the Bavarian Order of St. Michaels when he visited his studio . The King of Württemberg honored him with the Order of Frederick . In 1889 he was awarded the title of professor, in 1902 he was made an honorary citizen of Weilheim an der Teck , and on April 14, 1905, an honorary citizen of the city of Biberach an der Riss . After his death he was transferred to Biberach at his own request and buried next to his friend Anton Braith in the Catholic cemetery. He bequeathed his artistic estate, his studio and 60,000 marks to the city of Biberach.
Works
His early, more scenic images are Partenkirchen , game from the Swabian Alb , Kochem on the Moselle , The Lake Hallstatt and summer on the woman island (with Jan Cornelis Johann Mali).
The later, on which the animal decoration predominates, include the homecoming herd , morning and evening in the village , the shepherd's morning greeting , the rainy cattle market , sheep when thunderstorm is approaching , the table d'hote in the stable , sheep in spring , village party on Lake Constance and A morning at Amalfi .
estate
The richly furnished studio showrooms from Munich with the estates of Anton Braith and Christian Mali can be seen today in the Braith Mali Museum in Biberach an der Riss . They are considered rare examples of well-preserved artist studios from the 19th century and are therefore a first-rate cultural monument.
Trivia
On January 22, 2017, an episode of the NDR's Lieb & Teuer program was broadcast, moderated by Janin Ullmann . A painting by Christian Mali was discussed with the painting expert Ariane Skora. A visit to the Braith Mali Museum rounded off the episode. On February 4, 2018, another episode of the program discussed a painting of Mali. The painting expert this time was Barbara Guarnieri.
