Christoph Friedrich von der Osten-Sacken (* around 1697 in Courland ; † November 24, 1759 ), Lord of Appriken, was a politician from Courland and at times regent in the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia . He came from the German-Baltic aristocratic family Osten-Sacken .

Origin and family

His father was the captain in Mitau Fromhold von der Osten-Sacken , Herr auf Schnepeln, Suhr and Seemuppen in Kurland (1647–1700), his mother was Maria Elisabeth von Fircks from the Nurmhusen family . Christoph Friedrich was married to Catharina von Korff (1700–1742) and his second marriage to Juliana Louise von den Brincken on Sessilen and Ewaden. From the first marriage:

  • Katharina von der Osten-Sacken (1716–1754), she was married to Johann Ernst von der Osten-Sacken (1710–1795) and had three sons with him,
  • Agatha Benigna von der Osten-Sacken († 1806), she was married to Ulrich von der Osten-Sacken (1702–1790) and had six sons and three daughters with him,
  • Ferdinand von der Osten-Sacken (1730-1812) he was married to Elisabeth von Manstein (~ 1760), they had a son,
  • Eleonore Margarethe von der Osten-Sacken (1731–1786) was married to Wilhelm von Korff (1739–1799) and they had two sons.

Career

Christian Friedrich von der Osten-Sacken studied in 1706 at the Brandenburg University in Frankfurt and in 1707 at the University of Leiden ( Netherlands ). From 1721 to 1731 he was district administrator of Pilten , in the meantime he was a delegate to the royal commission in Mitau in 1727 . In 1731 he was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Courland and Zemgale. In 1736 he was elected to the highest office of a senior councilor and was land steward until 1759 . Between 1737 and 1759, as chairman of the upper council, he was temporarily regent of the duchy. In 1744, he was one of the leaders of the Kurland knighthood minority , together with Chancellor Hermann Christoph Fink von Finkenstein (1693–1758) , who stood up for Duke Ernst Johann von Biron (1690–1772).

Regency

After Duke Biron was deposed in 1740, an interregnum was created in the duchy for a time , which ended with the election of Charles of Saxony in 1758. At the time of the vacancy, the committee of the four senior councilors directed the fortunes of the duchy and took over the regency - partly jointly or on behalf of the court master. The college of senior councilors elected the Landhofmeister Christoph Friedrich von der Osten-Sacken as regent for the period from May 4, 1737 to July 13, 1737 and again from November 20, 1740 to November 16, 1758.

Squire and benefactor

His property included Appricken, Dsehrwen, Libbingen, Seemuppen, Ewangen and Sinten. In 1748 he had a stone church built in Seemuppen , which was consecrated in 1752 for the Evangelical Lutheran Christians . As patron of Appricken he left off in 1741 year six children from the church to teach at the expense of the landlord.
