Christoph Schlegel (also: von Gottleben, von Gottlieben ; * January 1, 1613 in Großkmehlen ; † July 2, 1678 in Grimma ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Christoph was a son of the Saxon court preacher and superintendent in Weissensee Martin Schlegel and his wife Maria Faber (born October 3, 1586 in Plossig, † October 6, 1676 in Chemnitz), the daughter of pastor Zacchaeus Faber . He received his first training from 1618 at the Kreuzschule in Dresden . In the summer semester of 1627 he moved to the University of Leipzig , where he first completed philosophical studies. In Leipzig on March 22, 1628, he acquired the baccalaureate in philosophy and on January 28, 1630 the degree in philosophy. During his studies he had drawn attention to himself with poetry and received the poet's crown from Matthias Hoë von Hoënegg . He then devoted himself to theological studies, for which he moved to the University of Jena in the summer semester of 1631 , in order to primarily follow the lectures of Johann Gerhard .

He continued these studies on May 18, 1633 at the University of Wittenberg with Wilhelm Leyser and Johann Hülsemann . In the same year he received a position as court preacher and tutor to the widowed Princess Magdalene von Anhalt-Zerbst (1585–1657) in Coswig (Anhalt) . He took over this task after his ordination in Wittenberg in 1634. Continuing to deal with theological topics, he obtained a licentiate in theology on February 22, 1638 at the Wittenberg University. On May 17, 1638, he moved to Breslau as a deacon (midday preacher) at the Elisabeth Church , and became a consistorial assessor and professor of religion and literature at the Elisabeth high school there.

On November 10, 1644 he became provost of the collegiate church of the Holy Cross and St. Bartholomew , for which he received his doctorate in theology on October 14, 1645 at the University of Wittenberg. In 1647 he followed a call as superintendent and pastor in the Hungarian Leutschau . During that time he was on August 14, 1651, by Emperor Ferdinand III. , ennobled to the Hungarian nobility, with Gottleben added to his name and he put on a coat of arms that shows a miner with a fist. However, since he could not stand the climate in Leutschau and fell ill, he resigned from office there in 1656. He returned to his home country, where he stayed for some time as a private scholar in Lauban and Pirna . In 1660 he became pastor and superintendent in Herzberg and moved to Grimma in the same capacity on June 6, 1662 , where he finally died a few years later.
