geography

Clarkston borders directly on the city of Tucker to the north and is about five kilometers northeast of Decatur and about ten kilometers northeast of Atlanta .

history

For a long time Clarkston was only a small, farmer-inhabited place, whose goats earned him the nickname "Goatstown". The railway connection at the end of the 19th century began to grow slowly; the actual city was founded in 1882, the name goes back to a railroad worker. The almost exclusively white middle-class city began to attract immigrants in the 1980s, partly because of the low cost of living, partly because it quickly gained a reputation as a place of tolerance. In the new millennium, Clarkston saw progressive politics in the region; z. B. marijuana has been legalized. The city itself has given itself the motto “Where possibilities grow”.

The city is sometimes called the "Ellis Island of the South" because of its mixed population structure; the city is occasionally visited by international politicians who want to find out why integration and coexistence work so well in Clarkston. The reason is that the city received a strong influx of refugees compared to the size of the city from the 1990s. According to the city's website, over 30% of residents were born outside of the United States.
