Claude de Choiseul-Francières (born January 1, 1632 in Langres , † March 15, 1711 in Paris ) was Comte de Choiseul , Marquis de Francières and Lord of Yrouerre and since 1693 Marshal of France .

Life

He was born the son of the baron and later margrave Louis von Francières and Catherine von Nicey. In 1658 he married Catherine Alphonsine von Renty († October 17, 1710), the daughter of Gaston Jean Baptiste de Renty, Baron von Landelles. The marriage remained childless.

In 1649 he began his military career as a captain in the regiment of Prince Condé . In the uprisings of the Fronde , he showed his courage and loyalty to the king.

After the death of his father in 1658 he took over his office as governor of Langres . In 1664 he was involved in the battle of Mogersdorf , in which Austrian and French troops fought off the Turks. He was promoted to Brigadier des armées du roi in 1667 and took part in the invasion of the French troops in Flanders, where he also took part in the sieges of Douai , Tournai and Lille . In 1669 he was promoted to Maréchal de camp .

In the Dutch War (1672–1679) he distinguished himself in 1674 in the Battle of Seneffe . In 1676 he became Lieutenant General , served under the Marshal of Luxembourg and in 1677 took part in the siege of Freiburg . In 1678, Choiseul was involved with Marshal François de Créquy's army in the battle of Rheinfelden and in the destruction of the castles and palaces in the Baden Oberland. He also went to the Northern War with Créquy in 1679 and fought against the troops of the Brandenburg Elector Friedrich Wilhelm in the Battle of Minden .

In 1684 he was appointed governor of Saint-Omer . For his long service to the king, he was finally made Marshal of France in 1693. After he had already been governor of Langres and St. Omer, he was given this post in Valenciennes in 1697 .

Choiseul was buried in the church of the Pipcus Fathers in Paris, but later reburied. He has been buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery since 1850 .
