Clayton is a city and also the county seat of Rabun County in the US state of Georgia with 2047 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Clayton is located in the extreme northeast of Georgia in the Blue Ridge Mountains . Part of the range is Black Rock Mountain State Park, just north of the village . The closest major cities are Atlanta (150 km southwest) and Knoxville (190 km north).
history
Clayton was founded in 1821. From 1904 to 1961 the place was connected to the railway network by the Tallulah Falls Railway .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 2047 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 836 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.32 people per household. There are a total of 1152 households.
58.4% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 2.92 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 30.3% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 34.1% of all households.
24.4% of the population were younger than 20 years, 26.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 21.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 27.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 40 years. 48.7% of the population were male and 51.3% were female.
85.1% of the population identified themselves as whites , 1.5% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 0.7% as Asian Americans . 8.9% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.2% to several ethnic groups. 20.8% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 30,617 USD , while 25.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.
