Cleo is a German feature film by director Erik Schmitt from 2019. It premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival 2019 as the opening film in the Generation Kplus section. Marleen Lohse plays the title role.
action
Cleo works for a tourist office in Berlin and has lived a lonely, isolated life since her father died when Cleo was ten years old. Cleo blames herself for her father's death and has been hoping since childhood that a magical watch hidden in the Sass brothers' lost treasure will help her turn back time and save her father. When she meets the young adventurer Paul one day, who has found a map that should lead to the treasure, she joins him, and Cleo begins a journey through Berlin's history, back to the beginning of time.
background
Cleo is a coproduction of the Berlin Film GmbH detail with the small television game of the ZDF . The film was shot in 2017 at over 70 locations exclusively in Berlin. It is Erik Schmitt's feature film debut. Schmitt had previously made short films that were also set in Berlin and already revealed his special visual style. The costumes by costume designer Melina Scappatura come from the theater art fundus and the costume fundus of Studio Babelsberg . The film music, composed by Johannes Repka , was recorded by the Babelsberg German Film Orchestra .
The film, which was given the rating of “Valuable” by the German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) , was the opening film in the Generation Kplus section at the 2019 Berlinale and won the Leo in the category of best children's and youth film in 2019 at the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Film Festival .
reception
In his review for epd Film , Jens Balkenborg writes that one has to come to terms with some things in Schmitt's film: “with a story wrapped in cotton candy, with over-the-top, stenciled characters and, above all, a romance oozing kitsch at the end.” Cleo celebrates “his Fairy-tale-likeness explicitly in every second of the film, with the crowbar. ”One could“ bother oneself with this and even more ”, and yet“ the boundless joy in telling stories with which Schmitt told his film ”comforts“ over and over again ”.
