Colin McRae: DiRT [ dɜ: rt ] is a computer and console game developed by Codemasters and released on June 15, 2007 in Europe. The racing game is the sixth installment in the Colin McRae Rally series and was released for the Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems as well as for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game consoles . The game simulates motor sport competitions on specified routes with different vehicle types and road surfaces .

Game mechanics

There are four game modes, career, championship, rally world and multiplayer, to choose from. In career mode there are a total of 66 routes available, 61 of which must be cleared by victories. In championship mode there are official national, European and international rally competitions with authentic two-, four- and all-wheel drive rally vehicles. The single player mode offers five different levels of difficulty: Beginner, Clubman, Amateur, Pro AM and Professional, between which you can choose before each race and which influence the strength of the opponent and the damage model . In the multiplayer mode up to 100 drivers can compete against each other in a single race at the same time, whereby only the achieved end times of the independently driving drivers are displayed.

The competitions are divided into six disciplines:

  • Rally : Individual time trial with route announcement on changing road surfaces
  • Rally Raid : long-distance races without classic track restrictions
  • Mountain race : time trial on winding, ascending routes such as the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb
  • Rallycross : Sprint races on circuits against one to ten opponents
  • Championship Off-Road Racing (CORR): Sprint races on circuits against up to ten opponents
  • Crossover events: duel on a two-lane, closed track

presentation

The display is done by the proprietary graphics engine Neon developed by Codemasters and Sony Computer Entertainment , which has since been renamed the Ego engine . The graphics engine supports DirectX 10, Pixel-Shader 4.0, blurring and high dynamic range rendering effects in a video resolution of 600 × 480 ( VGA ) to 1920 × 1200 ( WUXGA ) pixels. The damage model , which was already used in DTM Race Driver 3 , simulates grinding marks, paint scratches, a deformable body and a destructible environment. The game offers six different perspectives, in addition to the bumper, bonnet, top view and cockpit, some additional perspectives such as a helmet camera have been implemented.

publication

Codemasters announced a new part of the McRae series for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and the Windows operating system at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2006 . On July 20, 2006, the sales titles Colin McRae: DiRT for Europe and DiRT: Colin McRae Off-Road for the United States were announced. DiRT was released for the Xbox 360 and PC on June 15, 2007 in Europe and June 19 in North America. The version for the Playstation 3 was sold from September 1, 2007 in North America and from September 14, 2007 in Europe, the day before Colin McRae and his son Jonny died in a helicopter crash. In response to the unexpected death of the namesake, Codemasters decided not to launch an extensive advertising campaign for the Playstation 3 version.
