More than 10 ensembles are part of the forum, including several orchestras, choirs, a big band and the ballet studio of the University of Bonn. The director of the Music and Dance Forum has been University Music Director Jörg Ritter since 2014 .

history

The founding of the Collegium Musicum Bonn, which was carried out on November 18, 1953 by the musicologist Emil Platen at the University of Bonn and was initially headed by the professor of musicology Joseph Schmidt-Görg , was decisive for the development of the Music and Dance Forum . Five years later, Platen took over the management of the associated orchestra, and in 1963 he was appointed "Academic Music Director ".

In the late 1960s, a large rehearsal room for the Collegium musicum was built near the cellar theater in Am Hof 7 . In addition to the art education studio , the new building was part of the entire university.

From 1990 to 2012 Walter L. Mik was Academic Music Director. After his successor André Kellinghaus left the Collegium musicum after two years of activity and the rectorate and student representatives did not agree on a successor, the university management appointed a new university music director. As had been planned for some time, the Collegium musicum was dissolved and the Forum Music and Dance was created for its area of responsibility within the cultural forum. The orchestra and choir of the Collegium musicum Bonn were not prepared to work with a conductor they did not support and initially continued their work outside the newly founded forum. Since 2016, all ensembles have again been brought together under the umbrella of the Forum Music and Dance.

Orchestra of the Collegium musicum Bonn

After the dissolution of the Collegium Musicum Bonn as the central operating unit of the university and the failed replacement of the leadership of the choir and orchestra in 2014, the ensembles nevertheless decided to keep the name. The so-called orchestra of the Collegium musicum Bonn today consists of around 60 students and is currently directed by Michael Barth.

history

After the split from the university, the then 140 members of the choir and orchestra could no longer rehearse in the university from April 1, 2014. The orchestra was about to break up. While the Camerata musicale, the big band, the jazz choir and the academic orchestra of the university were able to continue rehearsing, the members of the choir and the orchestra organized their own rehearsals in addition to protest actions under the slogan of the “ General break - no thanks” initiative; the orchestra in the auditorium of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium and the choir in the auditorium of the Clara-Schumann-Gymnasium . Ansgar Eimann and Andreas Winnen were hired as conductors. The ensembles were financially supported by the AStA of the University of Bonn and the Society for the Promotion of Student Music-Making in Bonn. Among other things, there was a benefit concert in Bonn's Kreuzkirche . Rector Jürgen Fohrmann , who took over the selection process to fill the Academic Music Director after the differences between the Rectorate and the student representatives, was "surprised by the aggressive tone and the degree of unfairness" towards the candidate he proposed. The choir and orchestra of the Collegium musicum joined the Forum Music and Dance of the University of Bonn with their own leaders in the summer semester 2016 and are now making music again within the university.

The ensemble was the first group of western students to make a guest appearance in Romania in 1966 , performed in Brunei in 1985 and was the first orchestra in the world to be invited to North Korea in 2000 .

Michael Barth (* 1970), music teacher at the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium, has been leading the orchestra since the 2017/18 winter semester .
