Barry S. Coller

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barry Spencer Coller (* 1945 ) is an American physician and hemostaseologist (blood coagulation researcher) at Rockefeller University . He is best known for his contributions to understanding platelet aggregation and the receptors and ligands involved , including the fibrinogen receptors αIIbβ3 and GPIIb / IIIa and the Von Willebrand factor . Coller and co-workers were instrumental in the development of abciximab , an antibody fragment used to inhibit platelet aggregation.

Live and act

Coller earned a bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 1966 and an MD from New York University in 1970 with a medical degree. He began his residency in internal medicine at Bellevue Hospital in New York City , but moved to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda , Maryland in 1972 to work on blood clotting. In 1976, Coller took over a first professorship (assistant professor) at the newly established department of blood coagulation at Stony Brook University . In 1982 he became an associate professor and in 1982 he was given a full professorship. Together with Arnold Levine , he developed various monoclonal antibodies against fibrinogen and Von Willebrand factor. Together with the company Centocor , the antibody 7E3 against fibrinogen receptors or its fragment abciximab was brought to market maturity. Together with Accumetrics , he developed an automated test to monitor platelet function in patients treated with abciximab, acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and clopidogrel .

In 1994, Coller moved to the Mount Sinai School of Medicine as a professor of internal medicine , and in 2001 to head the Department of Blood and Vascular Biology at Rockefeller University . He did a lot of other work at both institutions on the interaction of 7E3 with various structures involved in blood clotting, including various integrins . Coller's other work deals with Glanzmann's thrombasthenia , a hereditary thrombocytopathy , and sickle cell anemia . Since 2012, Coller has also headed the Digestive System Diseases Research Division at Rockefeller University.
