action

15-year-old Mary Elizabeth Cep, who named herself Lola at the age of five, loves to be in the spotlight and dreams of becoming a successful actress. When she moves with her mother and her little twin sisters from New York to Dellwood, a suburb in New Jersey , she feels as if she has been transferred to the deep provinces. She literally means: I was born and nurtured in New York, the center of the universe. Unfortunately, my mother is moving me to another planet. New Jersey.

The only good thing about this move for Lola is the prospect of becoming the new star in high school, but that role has already been taken over by arrogant Carla Santini. Lola finds a soul mate in the outsider Ella, who, like Lola, is a big fan of the rock band "Sidarthur". The front man of the band, Stu Wolff, is a modern Shakespeare and her great idol for Lola .

Lola wins her first small victory over her rival Carla when she gets the lead role in the school play "Pygmalion". However, her joy gives way to deeper sadness when she learns that her favorite band “Sidarthur” is breaking up. Both Lola and her rival Carla are determined to attend the band's farewell concert to be held in New York. When Carla shows that she also has tickets for the after-show party in Stu's house, Lola claims that she also has tickets and thus puts Ella and herself in great distress. If the two do not actually manage to come to the party, they make themselves the mockery of the school.

It takes a lot of effort for Lola and Ella to convince their parents to let them go to New York. Since the two girls have not received any tickets for the concert, they look for a black marketeer in front of the hall, but discover that they forgot all of their money on the train to New York.

However, Lola is convinced that they will make it to the aftershow party and sets off with Ella on foot to Stu's house, which they know from a magazine. After a while, the girls realize that they are being followed by a man with a dog, but Lola realizes that the hooded man is her father, who follows her for protection. Since Lola has always claimed that her father was killed in a tragic accident in order to make herself more interesting, she asks him to retire.

Eventually the girls find Stu's house, but cannot get past the doorman. Suddenly the drunk Stu stumbled out of the house after an argument with his band mates. Lola and Ella follow the disoriented star and take him to a café to sober up. There, however, Stu misbehaves in such a way that the three of the two policemen present are arrested. Lola is now forced to call her father, which reveals her lie. Ella is very disappointed in her new friend.

When Stu comes to, he invites the girls and Lola's father to his party. After Lola makes up with Ella, the two girls enjoy their triumph when Carla sees them at the party.

Lola hopes to talk to Stu about his music, but the rock star is drunk again. Lola feels completely disaffected and tells Stu on the head that he is a drunkard.

The next day of school, Lola and Ella are looking forward to telling their story, but Carla spread the word throughout the school that Lola hadn't even been to the party. In contrast to Lola and Ella, Carla has photos of the party. Nobody believes Lola her story and everyone laughs at her. She doesn't want to appear in the play anymore, but Ella convinces her friend not to give up so easily. Lola's performance is finally a complete success, which Carla doesn't like at all.

At the party that followed in Carla's house, Stu suddenly appears. He has taken Lola's words to heart and wants to fight his drinking problems. He thanks Lola and dances with her. This proves to everyone that Lola was telling the truth and now Carla is the mockery of her classmates. But Lola is forgiving and makes peace with Carla.

After these events, Lola now feels ready for a relationship with her classmate Sam.
