History and population development

Settlement in the area of Cormorant began in 1870. The first settler in the area was Dugald Campbell from Glasgow . More followed and on February 26, 1872 the first meeting of the community took place and Cormorant was organized as a township. A first mill was built in 1877 and operated with water power from the dammed water, but later equipped with a steam plant. Around the same time, the first store was opened. At first, Cormorant did not have a post office. The next one was in Fort Pomme de Terre. The Northern Pacific Railway reached Becker County, but a station was built in Audubon, not Cormorant. When William D. Washburn ran for a seat in Congress in 1878 and visited the area, residents pledged their support if they could get a post office in their township. On June 7, 1878, the first postmaster was appointed to the post office of Cormorant, which at that time was still called Cormorant Mills . The name of the post office was changed to Cormorant on August 24, 1881.

The name was derived from Big Cormorant Lake and Upper Cormorant Lake , whose names in turn were taken from the Ojibwe language .

The 2000 census showed Cormorant 965 inhabitants. At the 2010 census , the township had 1,039 inhabitants. According to calculations, the number of inhabitants rose to 1116 by 2016.

politics

The site received greater media attention when a 7-year-old Great Pyrenees named Duke was elected honorary mayor as a so-called write-in candidate with a majority of votes . The residents of the township wanted a personality as mayor who was not so political and would nevertheless represent them well. At a local festival, the right to vote in the election of the honorary mayor could be acquired as part of a fundraising for 1 US dollar. 12 people did so and then wrote the dog's name on the ballot; so the dog had won the election with a majority of the votes cast, because his human opponent had only received 2 or 3 votes. In payment for his services, Duke received an annual supply of dog food. After a one-year term in office, he was re-elected in 2015, 2016 and 2017. After four terms in office, he did not run again in August 2018.
