Cory Michael Smith (born November 14, 1986 in Columbus , Ohio ) is an American actor . He became known to a wide audience through his leading role as Riddler in the TV series Gotham (2014-2019).

Life

Cory Michael Smith, the youngest son of David Smith and nurse Theresa Fagan, grew up in Columbus with his older brother Chad. He graduated from Hilliard Darby High School in Hilliard, Ohio in 2005 . At the time, his career goals fluctuated between lawyer and concert pianist. During his four-year studies at the private Otterbein University in Westerville (Ohio), he gained his first theater experience with plays such as The Scene , The Caucasian Chalk Circle , Who Is Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and tartuffe .

In an article from March 2018, he described his sexuality as queer .

Career

Between 2009 and early 2012, Smith appeared in various regional theater productions in New York . He played the leading role of Matt Hucklebee in the musical The Fantasticks at the Barrington Stage Company in Berkshires ( Massachusetts ) and at the Repertory Theater in St. Louis . In 2011, Smith starred in the off-Broadway premiere of the rock musical The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World at Playwrights Horizons .

In 2013 he made the jump to Broadway . In addition to Emilia Clarke, he played the role of Fred in the musical adaptation of Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffanys .

Movie and TV

Besides Twilight -Star Kristen Stewart Cory Michael Smith starred in the in January 2014, the Sundance Film Festival appeared War Drama Camp X-Ray - A forbidden love by director Peter Sattler . In it he plays the PFC Bergen , a guard of the Camp X-Ray of the same name in the “Guantanamo” prison of the United States Navy . He had other roles alongside Amanda Seyfried in the short horror film "Dog Food" and alongside Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara in the drama " Carol " .

Smith's final big screen breakthrough came in 2014 when he cast the lead role of Edward "Riddler" Nygma in the crime series Gotham , based on the Batman comic universe from DC Comics . During the production of Gotham he was seen as a supporting actor in Wonderstruck and Aufbruch zum Mond . He also starred in the 1985 indie film , which is about a dying AIDS sufferer who visits his conservative family in Texas to spend one last Christmas with them.

In July 2018 he presented Kalle Oskari Mattila essay catfishing Strangers to Find Myself for Modern Love podcast of the New York Times . From 2019 he is called Thomas Christie in the television series Utopia of Prime video to be seen.
