Crayon Shin-chan ( Japanese ク レ ヨ ン し ん ち ゃ ん , Kureyon Shin-chan ) is a manga series by the Japanese artist Yoshito Usui that ran from 1990 to February 2010 , also as an anime television series with over 1000 episodes, several spin-off series, about 80 specials and over two dozen feature films was implemented. After Usui's death in September 2009, it has been continued as Shin Crayon Shin-chan ( Japanese 新 ク レ ヨ ン し ん ち ゃ ん , Shin Kureyon Shin-chan ) since August 2010 .

Five-year-old Shinnosuke Nohara, known as Shin-Chan Nohara, drives his parents Harry and Mitsy Nohara insane. He ignores all rules and social conventions, and it is not uncommon for him to show his interlocutors his bare buttocks . The series' joke builds on Shin-Chan's actions and remarks, which are absolutely inappropriate in the situations portrayed and which often embarrass his parents.
Characters
- Shin-Chan Nohara ( 野 原 し ん の す け , Nohara Shinnosuke ) is the protagonist of the series. He makes life hell for his fellow men and rarely shows compassion. In the course of the series it is noticeable that he inherited certain character traits from his mother and father.
- Mitsy Nohara ( 野 原 み さ え , Nohara Misae ) is the mother of Shin-chan. She is easily irritable and gives headbuttons when Shinnosuke has done something. On top of that, she is also pretty stingy and hits every offer, regardless of whether the product is useful or not. She loves cheesecake and afternoon nap, which is why Shin-chan often accuses her of being a bad housewife.
- Harry Nohara ( 野 原 ひ ろ し , Nohara Hiroshi ) is the father of Shin-chan. He's a businessman, so he comes home late. Like Shin-Chan, he has a penchant for young, attractive women, and his wife also gives him head nuts for this.
- Daisy Nohara ( 野 原 ひ ま わ り , Nohara Himawari ) is Shin-Chan's little sister. She copied many character traits from her brother Shin-chan. For example, she has a weakness for beautiful men and objects that shine.
- Lucky ( シ ロ , Shiro ) is Shin-Chan's dog. He is neglected by the Noharas and is not infrequently seen with a growling stomach and an empty bowl of food.
- Max ( 佐藤 マ サ オ , Satō Masao ) is one of Shin-Chan's classmates in the Futaba preschool. He is a very scared child and starts to cry at every little thing.
- Bo ( ボ ー ち ゃ ん , Bō-chan ) is also a classmate. He is calm and intelligent, but his nose is always running.
- Cosmo ( 風 間 ト オ ル , Kazama Tōru ) is the intelligence beast among Shin-Chan's classmates. He's very conceited and annoyed with Shinnosuke's behavior. Sometimes he also fools his classmates, for example by saying that he has already had coffee when this is not true.
- Miss Dori ( よ し な が み ど り , Yoshinaga Midori ) is Shin-Chan's teacher. She is very friendly, but also irritable. Sometimes Shin-chan and his friends visit her, usually at inopportune times. She has a friend named Ricky, but he is rarely mentioned.
- Miss Uma ( ま つ ざ か ウ メ , Matsuzaka Ume ) is another teacher in the Futaba preschool. She pretends to be rich and dresses in apparently expensive clothes. Furthermore, it always fails because of men. However, she and Hans Dieter, a work colleague of Harry, get along very well.
- Director Enzo ( 園長 , Enchō , dt. "Preschool director", actually: 高 倉 文 太 , Takakura Bunta ) is the director of the Futaba preschool. Because of his appearance, he is said to have had contacts with the Yakuza . Hence his nickname "Don Corleone" given by Shin-Chan (in Japanese he calls him Kumichō ( 組長 , dt. "Godfather") instead of Enchō ). In fact, Enzo says it openly several times that he is a dropout from the Yakuza (or the Cosa Nostra in the German version) and the position as a preschool teacher is part of his new identity given by the witness protection program. The name Takakura Bunta was probably derived from the actors Bunta Sugawara and Ken Takakura . Both actors are known in Japan for their roles in yakuza films.
- Masked Muchacho / Action Mask ( ア ク シ ョ ン 仮 面 , Akushon Kamen ; Kamen means mask ) is a superhero in a television series and Shin-Chan's idol. It is based on the Kamen rider - Tokusatsu .
- Gary Nohara ( 野 原 銀 の 介 , Nohara Ginnosuke ) is Shin-Chan's grandfather and the father of Harry Nohara. He always visits the Noharas unexpectedly, Shin-chan is quite similar to him.
- Mausi ( 小山 ま さ え , Koyama Masae ) is Mitsy's older sister and Shin-Chan's aunt. She has loved playing pranks on Mitsy since childhood, which she still does on spontaneous visits. Because of her childish nature, Mausi gets on well with Shin and Grandpa Gary.
- Mrs. Goober ( 北 本 さ ん , Kitamoto-san ) is a neighbor of the Noharas and known for her gossip.
Publications
Manga
From 1990 to 2003 the manga appeared in the Manga Action magazine at Futabasha , but due to the magazine's temporary suspension, Shin-Chan moved to the Manga Town magazine of the same publisher. After the death of Yoshito Usui in September 2009, the manga continued with chapters already completed until the December edition of Manga Town , which was published on November 5, 2009. A further three chapters were published by February 5, 2010 in the following three editions. The chapters drawn by Usui have been combined into a total of 50 manga volumes.
The manga will be continued as Shin Crayon Shin-Chan in a new form with members of Usui's team operating as 臼 井 儀 人 & UY ス タ ジ オ (UY Studio). The first chapter of the new series appeared on August 5, 2010 in the September issue of Manga Town magazine.
In Germany, the series was discontinued after eight volumes by Egmont Manga and Anime Verlag.
From 2002 to 2005, the first eleven volumes of Crayon Shin-Chan were published by ComicsOne-Verlag in the USA . This edition is read from the west. In 2007, CMX Manga, the manga division of DC Comics , re -licensed the series and has so far published eleven volumes with new translations. Casterman and later J'ai lu published the series in parts in French, Planeta DeAgostini Comics in Spanish, Panini Comics in Portuguese and Tong Li in Chinese.
Anime
The anime was produced in Japan under the direction of Kaichi Hara by Shin-Ei Animation from 1992 and has been shown in Japan on TV Asahi since April 13, 1992 . The character design was created by Hiroshi Ogawa . The plot of the anime, which now has more than 900 episodes, is based on the manga. There are currently 26 films. The 2007 film Arashi o Yobu Utau Ketsu dake Bakudan! was the fifth highest-grossing anime film of 2007, grossing $ 14.5 million.
Despite the author's death, the anime series has continued since October 16, 2009. Work was also carried out on the 18th feature film, Chō Jikū! Arashi o Yobu Ora no Hanayome , which was released in Japanese theaters on April 17, 2010.
The television series has been translated into English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Portuguese, among others. The series came to Germany under the name Shin-Chan in 2002, the version was made by Interopa Film . It was shown for the first time on April 5, 2002 on RTL II . It later ran on Jetix in the PayTV platform Premiere . A total of 130 episodes were broadcast in German; in autumn 2003, 15 episodes appeared on three DVDs / VHS. The German version is based on the English version and accordingly used the same title music. The English source material was also reflected in the names of the characters. That's the name of Shin-Chan's father "Harry".
There are two differently synchronized German versions of the first 52 episodes. The first was used from April 5, 2002 to June 24, 2002 during its first broadcast. In this version, the English version, which is filled with swear words and viewed as perverse, has been adopted and partially tightened. Due to protests, the series was suspended for a month and the synchronization was revised. Afterwards only this new version was shown on RTL II and Jetix . In episodes 53 to 130, care was taken from the start that the dubbing was not overdone. Thus, the latter episodes are closer to the original than the first 52 episodes. The first version was only shown during sporadic repetitions during the night on RTL II. The DVDs / VHS also only contain the second version and it was rated as FSK 12.
The band Bro'Sis , which had just formed on RTL II, was hired for the title song of the series . The text was taken from English, but completely rearranged and produced. A short version of the title song was used for the credits.
In 2017, new episodes of the series were dubbed in German by the dubbing company DMT - Digital Media Technologie GmbH in Hamburg. The names of the figures were left in the original. In January 2019, polyband announced that it would be releasing new episodes of the series from April 26, 2019 under the newly founded sub-label polyband anime .

In November 2002 RTL II and Warner Strategic Marketing released an album with several German songs, mostly sung by Tanja Geke as Shin-Chan. The subtitle is Boah Geilo !!! ( Tagline : Cheeky Songs and Cool Sayings ) and contains 15 tracks with about 48 minutes running time on one CD .

reception
According to MangasZene , the series was very controversial in Japan when it launched on TV because it contains many curses and sexual innuendos, but was very popular with audiences under the age of 12. Parents feared their children might model the behavior of the main character Shin-chan . Nevertheless, the series remained successful in the program. According to MangasZene, animations and characters are "kept very simple and simple" and, like the series as a whole, are certainly not to everyone's taste.
