Creight E. Gilbert

Creight Eddy Gilbert (born June 6, 1924 in Durham, North Carolina ; died April 6, 2011 in West Haven, Connecticut ) was an American art historian , art collector, and patron. He researched and published mainly on artists of the Italian Renaissance .

Life

Creight E. Gilbert was born in 1924 to Allan H. Gilbert and Katherine Everett Gilbert in Durham, North Carolina . Both parents were professors at Duke University there . His brother Everett Eddy later worked as a chemist. After finishing school, Creight E. Gilbert studied from 1938 to 1940 in his hometown at Duke University, then moved to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and obtained his bachelor's degree from New York University in 1942 . There he completed his studies in 1955 with the title of Doctor of Philosophy .

After teaching at Indiana University Bloomington for several years , he worked as a curator at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota . In 1961 he moved to Brandeis University in Waltham (Massachusetts) , where he worked as an associate professor until 1965 and then taught as a professor until 1969. He then taught at Queens College, City University of New York until 1977 , after which he moved to Cornell University in Ithaca . Gilbert was a professor at Yale University in New Haven from 1981 to 2000 .

In 1951 and 1952 he lectured at La Sapienza University in Rome , was a guest at the Harvard Center for Italian Renaissance Studies at Villa I Tatti in Florence in 1967 and 1968, and was a fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced in 1972 and 1973 Study in Amsterdam . As a visiting professor he taught at the University of California at Berkeley in 1959, at the University of Leiden in 1974/1975 , at Williams College in Williamstown (Massachusetts) in 1976 and at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1985 . He also worked from 1982 to 1985 as editor-in-chief for the respected specialist journal The Art Bulletin . In 2005, he donated his collection of drawings and prints to the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Norman, Oklahoma . Creight E. Gilbert died in West Haven, Connecticut in 2011.
