The von Creuzburg (also: Creutzburg, Kreutzburg; in early mentions also: Cruce- / Cruci berg , -berch , -burch , -borg ) were an old knightly, Thuringian noble family .

Origin and meaning of the name

Creuzburg is a settlement or place name . In the first member of the name it contains the Old High German Kruci or Old Saxon Kruzi , both borrowed from the Latin crux (cross). In the second part of the name, the name refers to a castle name, the Creuzburg on the Werra near Eisenach . Name members with -burg are derived from the ancient Germanic -burgs, which means "hill" or "protected height".

They began as Burgritter at Creuzburg Castle . Country Count's castle as the Creuzburg were Burgmannen to guard and fief given, which often took on the name of the castle.

In 1196, Burchart and Nortmann became castle men of Creuzburg Castle, took the name of this castle and called themselves Cruczeburg and Cruceburg from then on . Further possessions of the Lords of Creuzburg were in Ifta , Madelungen , Spichra and Lengröden .
