Cum sancta mater ecclesia

Cum sancta mater ecclesia ( Latin : Because the Holy Mother Church ) is an encyclical of Pope Pius IX. , with which he called for public prayer on April 27, 1859.

The outbreak of the Italian War of Liberation in 1859 (see main article: Risorgimento ) prompted the Pope to make a worldwide call to prayer . From his point of view, the struggles for freedom in Italy had cost immeasurable and bloodied victims. It is therefore the task and duty of the Catholic peoples to pray for peace and to implore the assistance of Mary, the Mother of God . His appeal was also addressed to those who could turn evil for good and thus obtain justice and charity. In this way a wholesome peace can arise with God , with oneself and with all other people.
