Dwayne J. King (born June 27, 1984 in Meadow Lake , Saskatchewan ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who has played for the St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League during his playing career . His younger brother Dwight is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
King began his career in 2001 in the Canadian Junior League WHL with the Lethbridge Hurricanes . Already in that year he made a name for himself as a talented enforcer and year after year he was among the most active fighters of his teams. These qualities also drew the attention of NHL teams to him and he was selected in the 2002 annual NHL draft by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round at position 190.
After he again changed in his last season as a junior and the team with the Kelowna Rockets to the Memorial Cup won, he made his debut in the 2004/05 season as a professional in the Worcester IceCats , the farm team of the St. Louis Blues. There, too, as a 20-year-old newcomer, he got the top position in the penalty statistics with 178 minutes and 18 fistfights. Since the IceCats broke up in the summer of 2005 and the Blues changed their AHL farm team, King played for the Peoria Rivermen in the 2005/06 season .
On October 5, 2006, he made the jump into the roster of the St. Louis Blues for the first time and played his first NHL game against the San Jose Sharks . He has since continued his impressive performances in the NHL and has shown that he can take on some of the most experienced Enforcers, such as Reed Low (who was his mentor in Peoria in 2005), Scott Parker or Derek Boogaard . As a result, he received only a few minutes of ice time, as he was not yet ready for the league in terms of play , although blues coach Andy Murray was very impressed with his style of play. In the 2008/09 season he only played one game because he suffered a shoulder injury and was therefore out almost the entire season. In the following season he was unable to play due to a broken finger and only played 12 games in the AHL and ten in the NHL.
In July 2010, his contract was extended by two years before he was transferred to the Washington Capitals a little later in exchange for Stefan Della Rovere . After two years in the organization of the Capitals, King did not receive a new contract following the 2011/12 season and was then without a club for several months before joining the Ontario Reign from the lower class ECHL in February 2013 and the 2012/13 season there finished.
