Career
Derek Boogaard began his career as a hockey player in the Western Hockey League , where he was active from 1999 to 2003 for the Regina Pats , Prince George Cougars and Medicine Hat Tigers . He also played in the 2002/03 season for the Louisiana IceGators from the East Coast Hockey League , to which he had switched in the middle of the season and had made his professional debut. During this time he was selected in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft in the seventh round as the 202nd player of the Minnesota Wild . After playing for their farm team , the Houston Eros , in the American Hockey League from 2003 to 2005 , the attacker was only on the ice for the Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League since the 2005/06 season . In total, the Canadian completed 255 games for Minnesota and scored 14 points scorer .
At the beginning of the 2010/11 NHL season , Boogaard signed a four-year contract with the New York Rangers . On December 9, 2010, Boogaard was involved in a fistfight with Matthew Carkner during a Rangers game against the Ottawa Senators . In this fight, the player suffered a traumatic brain injury and a shoulder injury that excluded him from playing for the rest of the season.
On May 13, 2011, he was found dead in his Minneapolis apartment. Boogaard died "of an overdose of the highly effective pain reliever oxycodone in combination with alcohol" without suicidal intent.
Game style and death
Boogaard was mostly used as an enforcer within his professional career , within this role he fought a large number of fistfights and as a result suffered numerous injuries in the head area such as concussions and intermittent dementia , which ultimately led to Boogaard's disease from a chronic traumatic encephalopathy , the post mortem was diagnosed, were responsible. Due to the frequent injuries, Boogaard developed an addiction to pain medication, for which he went into treatment twice under pressure from his respective clubs. The direct connection between the consequences of Boogaard's style of play and his death, combined with the short distance in time to the deaths of two other NHL players who embodied similar types of players as Boogaard, sparked a discussion within the North American ice hockey scene about reducing health risks for players and the general raison d'être of fistfights in the game.
