The DB International GmbH (DBI) was a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn (DB). It was founded in 1966 as DE-Consult and, after almost 50 years, merged with DB ProjektBau on April 1, 2016 to form DB Engineering & Consulting .

history

The German Railway Consulting GmbH ( DE-Consult ) was born on May 26, 1966 jointly by the German Federal Railways and the Deutsche Bank , founded around offer with the aim of consulting services to the railroad and its financing in the international market. Initially, the company had eight employees.

One of the first orders in 1967 was the feasibility studies for major metro projects in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo .

In 1992 the railway holding company increased its shares from 49 to 74 percent; the share held by Deutsche Bank fell accordingly from 51 to 26 percent. At that time, the company had around 400 employees and managed around 200 projects worldwide. In 1991 it achieved a turnover of 115 million DM.

In the 1990s, the company was involved in the renovation of the Berlin tram viaduct and the German Unity No. 8 transport project.

As part of the railway reform of 1994, DE-Consult merged with EVDR Bahn-Consult , the former design and surveying company of the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

In 2003 DE-Consult was added as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the newly founded DB ProjektBau . At the beginning of 2007 the company was renamed DB International GmbH .

By 2008, the subsidiary had managed over 2,000 projects in 100 countries. It employed around 1,000 engineers.

With the establishment of DB Mobility Logistics (DB ML) in 2008, DB International became a wholly-owned subsidiary of DB ML. It was no longer subordinate to DB ProjektBau. This was part of the DB Netze infrastructure division , which did not belong to DB ML. On the German side, DB International was responsible, among other things, for the planning and construction work for Qatar Railways in the Emirate of Qatar . The cooperation with Qatar to build a railway infrastructure began in 2008. The developed concept was presented to the Emir of Qatar at the beginning of 2009. From 2011 the company was a strategic partner for the development and implementation of the local transport network.

In mid-2013, the company withdrew from Algeria , Greece , Libya , Rwanda and Thailand after an investigation by the Frankfurt public prosecutor's office revealed bribe payments. In this context, the company parted with more than 30 employees.

At the end of 2014, it was planned to merge the company with DB ProjektBau by mid-2015 to form DB Engineering + Consulting . Of the 4,500 employees, 1,700 were to move to DB Netz AG and 2,800 to move to DB Engineering + Consulting. The merger was completed on April 1, 2016. The company was most recently active in 29 countries (as of March 2016).

DB International GmbH should not be confused with DB International Operations GmbH, which was founded on October 12, 2017 and, as a new international unit of the DB Group, acquires, initiates and is responsible for rail operations and maintenance projects outside Europe.
