The ship class Damen MPV 8116 describes a series of three multi-purpose ships (MPV stands for “Multi Purpose Vessel”). The ships were built at Damen Shipyards Galați in Romania for the Swedish Coast Guard .

history

The construction of the ships goes back to the “ HELCOM Copenhagen Declaration 2001”, in which the Baltic Sea states committed themselves to maintaining sufficient capacities for combating accidents and pollutants at sea. Existing ships in Sweden were not considered sufficient for the intended tasks, so that Kustbevakningen and Sjöfartsverket decided to have three specially equipped ships built.

The first two ships in the series were ordered on December 1, 2005, and the third ship on April 9, 2007. They were built by Damen Shipyards Galați in Romania and delivered in 2009 and 2010 respectively.

The Poseidon was used in 2015 and 2016 as part of the FrontexTriton ” operation to rescue refugees in the Mediterranean .

Technical data and equipment

The ships are powered by diesel-electric technology . There are five Caterpillar generators (2 × 3512, each 1,362  kW output , 3 × 3516, 1,940 kW output), a Caterpillar harbor generator (C18, 492 kW output) and a Caterpillar emergency generator (3406, 240 kW output) for power generation. to disposal. The propulsion is effected by two azimuth thruster of Rolls-Royce , which are driven by two electric motors, each with 3,300 kW of power. As additional maneuvering aids, a propeller nacelle with an output of 850 kW and a cross-thrust control system with an output of 415 kW are available in the bow area . The ships have a system for dynamic positioning .

The ships have six decks . There are 17 cabins available for the crew . Two cabins are single cabins, 13 additional single cabins can be converted to double cabins, two cabins are designed for occupancy by four people. Additional beds can be set up in the infirmary , in the relaxation room and in the fitness room. 44 people can be accommodated on board.

There is a working crane in the aft deck area that can lift a maximum of 24 t. The maximum outreach of the crane is 21 m, it can then lift 8 t. There are two more cranes on the aft deck that can lift 2.8 and 1 t respectively (maximum extension 18 and 17 m). The hull is reinforced with ice ( ice class : 1A).

The ships are equipped with three dinghies . In addition to a lifeboat for ten people, they have two other boats for 16 people each, a boat that z. B. can be used for the transfer of people and a work boat.

The ships are intended as emergency tugs , for fire fighting at sea and for use in oil or chemical accidents. The bollard pull is 100 t. There are three extinguishing monitors available for fire fighting . Two water extinguishing monitors have a throughput of 1,200 m³ / hour, one foam extinguishing monitor has a throughput of 300 m³ / hour. An overpressure of 50 mbar can be generated in the superstructure so that the ships can work in dangerous atmospheres. The ships are equipped with skimmers in order to be able to absorb oil from the water surface. The ships' tanks hold 1,100 m³ of an oil-water mixture. The third ship in the series is also equipped for use in chemical accidents. It has an additional tank for chemicals with a capacity of 160 m³.

Two 10-foot containers and two 10-foot flat racks can be stowed in the holds of the ships . There is space on deck for four 20-foot containers or nine 10-foot containers. The ships have a sonar system and are set up for the use of an ROV .
