Bush . She replaced Tony Snow and was thus the second woman in this role after Dee Dee Myers . Her successor was Robert Gibbs . Since the end of the Bush presidency, she has worked as a TV commentator , among other things .

Early career

Perino grew up in Denver and attended Ponderosa High School in Parker , a suburb of Denver. She attended the University of Southern Colorado , where she graduated in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in mass communication and minor degrees in political science and Spanish. While still at university, she worked, among other things, for a television station located on the university campus, which broadcast weekly analyzes of Colorado politics. Perino was then enrolled in postgraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS). Perino graduated from this program while reporting on politics in Illinois for an offshoot of CBS .

Perino moved to Washington, DC , to work for Colorado Republican Congressman Scott McInnis , before spending nearly four years with Daniel Schaefer , who also served in the House of Representatives as a Republican for Colorado.

In 1997 she met her future husband Peter McMahon on a flight, a businessman born in Blackpool in 1954 , whom she married eleven months later. After Schaefer announced his withdrawal in 1998, Perino and McMahon moved to the UK. After a year they both moved to San Diego , where they lived for three years and Perino worked in the public relations department for a high-tech company.

In November 2001, Perino returned to Washington, where she became a Justice Department press secretary , a role she held for two years. She was then offered a position as Associate Director of the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) of the White House for Public Relations.

On March 31, 2006, President George W. Bush appointed Perino as his assistant assistant and assistant press officer for the White House, overseeing environmental issues. From March 27 to April 30, she was acting White House press secretary as incumbent Tony Snow was undergoing medical treatment.

President Bush announced on August 31, 2007 that Snow was stepping down from his post for health reasons and that Perino would replace him. Perino held the post from September 14, 2007 until the end of President Bush's administration.

Dana Perino attracted international attention at a press conference at which she, as acting press spokeswoman for the White House, publicly stated that the US was not waging a war in Iraq , but had been “invited”: “The US is not occupying Iraq [...] we are there at the invitation of a democratically elected government. "

After the Bush presidency

When the presidency changed to Democrat Barack Obama , she resigned and has since worked mainly as a TV commentator for the conservative news and opinion broadcaster FoxNews , including as a permanent member of the team for the discussion program The Five .
