action

In non-chronological form , a fatalistic drama about brotherly love and competition, grief, pride, anger and revenge is spun around the wake for the 22-year-old Johnny Tempio. In New York City , the Italian brothers Ray, Chez and Johnny found themselves between unions and the automobile factory, opportunistic small-time stargazers and hot-blooded communist zealots, until the most uncomplicated but also most radical of the brothers is the victim of an exchange of fire in this spiral of violence. The brothers' survivor, Ray, says he has no choice but to shed more blood. Chez, who has been shown to be choleric or manic-depressive for a long time , judges all male members of the Tempio family and himself in the final in a rampage .

Reviews

  • “An extremely dark film that uses the ciphers of the traditional gangster film to tell a tragedy of classic proportions. Multi-layered, excellently played and staged, it expands the genre to include a philosophical-theological depth and asks questions about responsibility for evil, for guilt, grace and redemption. - Worth seeing. ”
    Lexicon of international film
  • “The audience has the feeling that they have already met the characters in a variety of genre films. Ferrara does little to counter this impression. His film tends to encourage the viewer's disinterest over the entire distance. A little more variety would have done his bitter study good. ”- Dirk Steinkühler, in cut - Das Filmmagazin
  • “Abel Ferrara analyzes the biographies of the torn characters in long flashbacks and recalls their blood-soaked history. The rivalry fights take a back seat in favor of a psychological view of violence. In addition to the women, Benicio Del Toro and Chris Penn are particularly enthusiastic about the excellent ensemble. ”- TV feature film
