action

Annerl's mother died after a long illness and was only able to leave her daughter in debt. All furniture and the house itself are seized and sold. At the request of the pastor, the new pastor Hell takes her in as a maid in the neighboring village. Pastor Hell is, unlike his predecessor, young, lends a hand in the fields himself and willingly and self-sacrificingly helps the poor in the area. He takes Annerl with his hay wagon to the rectory and she initially takes him for the pastor's servant. The mistake is cleared up quickly and Annerl becomes an important support for the housekeeper Brigitte.

Pastor Hell is not popular with everyone in the village because, in the opinion of some, he interferes too much in everyday business instead of only doing his service in the church and the rectory. When Hell meets Sepp in the forest, who has just stolen a foal from the Finsterberg stud farm, he brings the foal back to its owner without revealing Sepp. He fell away from the faith because he was not allowed to marry his great love at the behest of the previous pastor. She was divorced; after the pastor's refusal, she committed suicide. Sepp believes that the new pastor is dogmatic like the old one. Together with the other dissatisfied men in the village, he files a complaint against Pastor Hell with the consistory , i.e. the episcopal ordinariate . One argument is the allegedly too close relationship between Hell and Annerl. Sepp had seen Hell pick up Annerl from the field during a thunderstorm and how they both hid under a blanket from the rain on the car. Since Hell Annerl also gave his deceased mother a new dress and a cross necklace for Easter, there is lively gossip in the village.

At the church festival there is an argument between Annerl and Michel, a young farmhand, about the gossip. Michel loves Annerl and she is disappointed that Michel believes the rumors. However, the two soon reconcile when Michel confesses to her that he will not listen to the rumors. During the festival, Sepp's mentally ill mother suddenly disappears after she learned that her own son had started the slanderous rumors about Annerl and Pastor Hell. A search party only finds the old woman dead. The word gets around that it was suicide. Sepp asks Pastor Hell, who once offered him his assistance, for help. He wants his godly mother to be buried on consecrated earth, but fears that suicides will not be allowed. Pastor Hell explains to him, however, that nobody knows how his mother died. As a righteous woman, she will of course be buried in the cemetery, but Sepp must also find his way back to the faith. Sepp is grateful to Hell and as a result turns into an honest man.

In order to silence the rumors, Michel Annerl proposes marriage, which she accepts with a heavy heart. Shortly before the wedding, which Hell is supposed to perform, the consistory's decision arrives in the village. Sepp is appalled because he was one of the initiators of the request to the consistory. The resolution stipulates that Hell will be removed from office pending a hearing and clarification of his case. He may only perform priestly acts in an emergency. Nevertheless, Hell then trusts Annerl and Michel, whom he had promised this. Both are declared husband and wife and leave the church together.

production

The girl from the rectory is based on the folk play The Pastor of Kirchfeld by Ludwig Anzengruber . The original script by Erwin C. Dietrich was replaced by an exposé by Hans Schott-Schöbinger , on which the script is based. The play had previously been filmed in 1914, 1926 and 1937 . Producer Dietrich wanted to take on the male lead himself, but director Lehner was able to persuade him to do without the famous actor Erich Auer.

At the same time as the Austrian remake, Hans Deppe shot a German version of the play. The competition for the earlier premiere was won by the German production, which was released in cinemas on July 21, 1955 under the title Der Pfarrer von Kirchfeld . So the title had to be changed. The girl from the vicarage had its premiere in Graz on September 29, 1955 and was almost as successful as Deppe's film.

In contrast to the literary model, "Lehner diluted, smoothed and harmonized the problems that occurred, as corresponded to the ideas of the 1950s." Lehner avoided criticism of celibacy and the attitude of the church towards suicide and the marriage of divorced people.

The film was shot at the Lipizzaner stud in Piber and in Köflach , among others . The Vienna Symphony will play , the singing comes from the Vienna Boys' Choir . Peter Herz wrote the lyrics . Gustav Abel created the film structures, and Gerdago created the costumes .

criticism

For the film service , Das Mädchen vom Pfarrhof was a "sweet, sentimental home film with the usual ingredients"

Cinema compared the film to Hans Deppe's version from 1955: “While he emphasizes the drama of a forbidden love, sentimentality is preferred here. Conclusion: heart and pain that you can hardly take it ”.
