action

Eight-year-old Marco suffers from the constant absence of his father, a pilot . The father's relationship with his mother is clearly strained, especially because the father, ostensibly for professional reasons, cannot spend the upcoming Christmas party with the family. But the father doesn't dare tell Marco that himself. Before he leaves, the father goes ice skating with Marco on a pond and builds a snowman with him. The frozen water surface and a fish frozen there symbolize the frosty distance that prevails between the father and his family despite all efforts.

Marco is increasingly irritated by the behavior of his father, who sends him away when he calls. The mother also seems to reproach her father more and more because of a secret that Marco does not understand. When his father leaves, Marco sees a toy train in the trunk, which he keeps for his Christmas present. During the night he dreams that he is diving in the bathtub, the surface of the water suddenly turns to ice and he is trapped underneath. His father tries to break the ice from above.

The next day the mother goes to an ice rink with Marco. During the bus ride there, Marco thinks he sees his father on the ice rink. But his mother explains to him that he is in another city. At the bus stop she instructs Marco to wait there briefly and calls his father outside Marco's earshot and orders him to leave the ice rink immediately, which she now wants to go with Marco.

On Christmas Eve, Marco happily opens his father's present, but instead of the expected toy train, he finds new ice skates. He leaves the apartment full of disappointment and hides by the pond. His mother goes there with his father and they look for him. The mother reproaches the father until he hits her. Marco, who is still hiding, watches the scene. The father says he must go now and that she should call the police. Meanwhile, Marco hides in his father's car and drives away with him unnoticed. At the destination, Marco enters an apartment where his father went and sees the toy train there. The father is sitting at the Christmas tree with a strange woman and two children who call him papa.

Now Marco realizes that the father has two families, one with his wife and two other children and one with Marco's mother and him. The wife and children are the first to notice the visitor. When the father sees Marco, he is not able to speak to Marco even now. This runs out of the apartment. In the last scene, you see Marco walking down the street and his mother, who drove to the house in a police car, follows behind.
