Dave Baron

Dave Baron (born February 7, 1988 ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass ) of modern jazz .

Life

Baron, who comes from Simsbury (Connecticut), gained his first musical experience as a cellist in local youth orchestras, where he was initially interested in classical music . He first encountered jazz when he was 12 when he heard musicians like Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong on the radio . He took a serious look at jazz when he was trained during his junior year at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts , where saxophonist Jimmy Greene became his mentor. Greene introduced Dave to bassist Reuben Rogersin front; he then traveled to New York City on the weekends to take lessons from him. He eventually moved to New York City in 2010 to do a bachelor's degree at the Eastman School of Music and then a master's degree from the Juilliard School .

He performed with Herbie Hancock at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center as part of a concert for Ron Carter's 75th birthday . He was one of fifteen semi-finalists in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition . As part of the competition, he performed with pianist Geoff Keezer and drummer Carl Allen at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Soon after, he was awarded second place in the Scott LaFaro Jazz Competition of the International Society of Bassists . Baron attended a professional development workshop with pianist Brad Mehldau hosted by the Weill Institute . He also took part in workshops at the Banff Center in Alberta, where he worked with artists such as Dave Douglas , Scott Colley and the ICP Orchestra .

Since then he has worked in the New York jazz scene a. a. with Eric Reed , Lew Tabackin , Mary Stallings , Peter Bernstein , Walt Weiskopf , Joe Lovano , Joe Magnarelli , Wycliffe Gordon , Bruce Barth and Bill Evans . According to Tom Lord , he was involved in six recording sessions in the field of jazz between 2010 and 2017, including a. With the Trio Slaye ( Take the Slaye Train , with Chris Ziemba, Kevin McDonald), with Nick Hempton and Nick Finzer Present (2019), Baron leads a quartet that includes Stacy Dillard , Bruce Barth and Peter Van Nostrand . Under his own name, he presented the album Introducing Dave , which was created with the participation of Lucas Pino , Matt Jodrell , Alex Wintz and Jimmy MacBride .
