David F. Cargo (2006)

David Francis Cargo (born January 13, 1929 in Dowagiac , Cass County , Michigan , † July 5, 2013 in Albuquerque , New Mexico ) was an American politician . He was governor of the state of New Mexico from 1967 to 1971 .

Life

Early years and political advancement

David Cargo attended the University of Michigan , where he studied law, among other things. He passed his law exam in 1957. His studies were interrupted by his military service. He spent this between 1953 and 1955 in the US Army in Germany .

Cargo was a member of the Republican Party . There he was a member of the liberal wing that was close to Nelson Rockefeller . Between 1963 and 1967, Cargo was an MP in the New Mexico House of Representatives . When he decided to run for governor in 1966, he first had to assert himself against the conservative wing of the party in the primary elections within his party.

Governor of New Mexico

After the successful gubernatorial elections in 1966, Cargo took up his new office on January 1, 1967. After being re-elected in 1968, he could exercise it until January 1, 1971. During this time, the cornerstone of New Mexico's environmental policy was laid. He put many areas under nature protection as parks. Governor Cargo also founded the state film commission in New Mexico and developed personal contacts in Hollywood . In some films he had small guest appearances. Under his administration, the governors' term of office was extended from two to four years. However, this change only came into effect after the end of his term of office.

Another résumé

In 1970 he was not allowed to run again directly due to a constitutional clause. Cargo therefore applied, albeit unsuccessfully, for a seat in the US Senate . Between 1973 and 1985 he lived in Lake Oswego ( Oregon ). There he applied unsuccessfully for the office of finance minister in 1984. He then returned to New Mexico. There he failed again in 1986 when trying to be elected to Congress . His attempt to become mayor of Albuquerque also failed, as did a renewed candidacy for governor of his state in 1994. David Cargo had five children with his wife Ida. He died in Albuquerque on July 5, 2013, at the age of 84.
