DeMarcus De'Juan Nelson (born November 2, 1985 in Oakland , California ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, Nelson worked briefly as a professional in the North American league NBA before continuing his career in European leagues from 2009. After stints in Italy , France and the Ukraine , he played in Greece , Monaco , France again and in Germany for Bayern Munich .

Career

Nelson was already a successful basketball player during his school days in California and was invited to the 2004 McDonald's All-American Game for the best high school basketball players in the country. He then got a scholarship to Duke University , whose basketball team Blue Devils is one of the most successful teams in the NCAA . In the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) he received several personal awards and was selected as a freshman in the selection of the best league beginners of the ACC and in his senior year 2008 in the "ACC First Team" in the selection of the five best players or as the best ACC player honored in his playing position. With Duke he won the ACC championship tournament in 2005 and 2006; in the nationwide NCAA finals it was enough for the ambitious team after winning the championship in the ACC but only to two participations in the round of 16 of the Sweet Sixteen , which could not be improved in the following.

After his four college seasons, Nelson was not considered in the 2008 NBA Draft when selecting future NBA professionals, but then got a contract in the North American professional league with the Golden State Warriors in his birthplace. Surprisingly, he started the season with the Warriors under coach Don Nelson as a starter on the position of point guard , which was not his normal playing position in college. This made him the first player in the history of the Warriors who was not selected in the draft process in his first appearance in a championship game of the NBA in the starting line-up. After a few missions, coach Don Nelson first sent him to the Bakersfield Jam farm team in the NBA Development League (D-League) before being brought back to the Warriors' squad after a month. In January 2009, DeMarcus Nelson was released from his contract after a total of 13 missions to make room for Jermareo Davidson , among others . Nelson then went straight to Europe and at the end of January 2009 had a job in the ABA League for the Croatian club KK Zagreb . However, he could not convince here and returned to his home country. In March 2009 he played in the D-League for the Austin Toros before the Chicago Bulls brought him back to the NBA at short notice in April 2009. In the summer of 2009, the Bulls deleted Nelson from their squad after he had not been used with them.

After his eventful first year as a professional Nelson went to the 2009/10 season long to Europe and signed a contract with Air Avellino in the Italian Lega Basket Serie A . At the end of the season, however, the former Italian Cup winner and European Cup participant narrowly missed the play-offs for the championship in ninth place because of the poorer direct comparison . After Nelson had tried unsuccessfully for a new contract in the NBA in the 2010 NBA Summer League wearing the Milwaukee Bucks jersey , he played for the French champions from Cholet in the LNB Pro A in the 2010/11 season . In the ULEB Euroleague 2010/11 the West French dropped out at their premiere at the highest European club level after the preliminary round because of the poorer direct comparison. As the main round first of the national championship, the defending champion again reached the final game for the championship, which was lost to SLUC Nancy Basket by two points . In the 2011/12 season Nelson initially had a brief contract in the Basketball Superliga Ukraine with the runner-up from Donetsk , but after a month he returned to Cholet in November 2011. After the loss of Sammy Mejia , however, Cholet only reached the eighth and final play-off place after the main round. Here you could surprise the first BCM Gravelines in the first round and move into the semi-final series for the championship, in which you were eliminated against Le Mans Sarthe Basket .

For the 2012/13 season Nelson got a contract with Red Star in the Serbian capital Belgrade . With the Serbian runner-up, he moved into the cup competition Kup Radivoja Koraća in the final, where there was a new edition of the previous year's final against serial champion KK Partizan Belgrade . Red Star won the revenge and Nelson was named the best player of the finals. Also in the final of the ABA league and the final series of the championship there was a dispute with the arch-rival Partizan, which he was then able to win. In the preliminary round of the ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 Nelson was eliminated with a Red Star after the preliminary round, although he was named "Player of the Week" as the most effective player on matchday four .

In June 2014 he was signed by the Greek top team Panathinaikos Athens . and after a year in Athens (and winning the cup competition) went to AS Monaco . He took on a leadership role at the team from the principality supported by the Montenegrin coach Zvezdan Mitrovic, but left Monaco at the end of December 2015 to accept an offer from the Spanish first division club Unicaja Malaga . In Malaga, the American made 19 appearances in the ACB league (4.7 points / game), in the EuroLeague he achieved 6.1 points per match. In October 2016 he signed a contract with the French club ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne and stayed there until 2019. In his last season in Lyon (2018/19) he worked again with coach Mitrovic, who had come from Monaco. Nelson contributed significantly to winning the French championship, he was named the best player in the final series.

At the beginning of September 2019, the American moved to the German champions FC Bayern Munich . His contract expired at the beginning of January 2020, he left Bayern after 13 Bundesliga appearances (5.5 points per match).
