Delfins (Eng. "Delphine") was a Portuguese pop band.

history

The band goes back to the first rehearsals in 1981. The singer Miguel Ângelo, brother of the founding bassist João Carlos, joined the group in 1982, which was completed in 1983 with the drummer Pedro Malkow. That year they gave their first concert, at the wedding of the sister of their guitarist Fernando Cunha, on the beach in Praia do Guincho near their hometown Cascais . In 1984 they recorded their first single for the independent label Fundação Atlântica (by Pedro Ayres Magalhães and others). During one of the recording breaks in the studio, her manager António Cunha, the guitarist's brother, set her name to Delfins . The record was released as a single and a maxi single .

In 1985 they played for the first time in the Lisbon Rock Rendez-Vous , and entered the 1985 Festival da Canção of the RTP , which decided on the representative of Portugal at the 1985 Eurovision Song Contest . With their song A Casa da Praia they took last place.

Her next debut album Libertação is produced by Carlos Maria Trindade and released by EMI - Valentim de Carvalho in 1987. It contains seven own songs and a version of the song Canção de engate , by António Variações . In 1988 their second album and a maxi single of the track 1 Lugar ao Sol were released , and they opened the Simply Red concert in Cascais.

In 1990 they changed labels and became the first Portuguese band in the Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG). In the same year their third album Desalinhados was released , and they opened Tina Turner's concert at the Sporting Lisbon stadium (next to today's Estádio José Alvalade XXI ).

In 1993 they released their concept album Ser Maior as a double CD and a triple LP, which they recorded in their own 1 Só Céu studios. They played in the Zénith (Paris) and gave three sold out concerts in a row at the Lisbon Teatro da Trindade . In 1994 she took part in the tribute projects for José Afonso and António Variações, and composed the music (and played some supporting roles) in the piece Breve sumario da História de Deus of Gil Vicente , of Carlos Avilez at the Teatro Experimental de Cascais staged.

In 1995 they appeared in Macau and as supporting act for Fernanda Abreu in Rio de Janeiro . That year another best of compilation was released , with two new songs. One of the two new tracks in particular, the title-giving O Caminho da Felicidade , was extremely successful and the album was awarded multiple platinum marks . In 1996 they released their album Saber A-Mar , which they recorded with musicians all over the world, especially in Brazil, with Roberto Fréjat (the band Barão Vermelho ), with Paulinho Moska , the wind section of Djavan , and the rapper Gabriel o Pensador , but also with a Zulu choir.

In 1997 they were honored by their record company for selling 500,000 units of the sound carriers they released for the BMG. In the same year they performed on three sold-out evenings at the Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon, and they played at the Brixton Academy in London.

In 1998 they released their album Azul in a Spanish (Castilian) sung version, which was released in Spain and some other countries. After a few older band members returned, they sang the title music of the Portuguese edition of Big Brother (TV show) as a band of seven , and released their seventh album Del7ins (sometimes also listed as Se7e ) in 2000 , which, however, disappointed sales expectations .

After a few best of compilations and live recordings, some of which were also released on DVD (including their concert at the Centro Cultural de Belém ), they released their album Delfins, recorded in England, in 2007 .

In 2009 they announced the end as an active band, with a farewell tour, and their last concert, New Year's Eve 2009 in the beach bay of their hometown Cascais. For the future, however, they have announced the release of previously unpublished image and sound recordings.

The Dolphins' musicians were occasionally involved in other projects, including the successful all-star project Resistência . Especially the singer Miguel Ângelo, who also acted as a music presenter on television and with solo albums, but also bassist Rui Fadigas and guitarist Fernando Cunha publish albums, solo and as guests of other bands. Ângelo is part of the Movimento band project , which is dedicated to the reinterpretation of Portuguese light music of the 60s, based on the Motown style and the mods .
